VOICE is pleased to announce that Dr. Jermaine Johnson, the Democratic nominee for Governor of South Carolina, will be our guest speaker at the October 19th luncheon. Make your plans now — this is an important opportunity to hear directly from a candidate for our state's highest office.
Dr. Johnson currently represents South Carolina House District 52 (Richland and Kershaw counties) and has served in the State House since 2020. A Columbia-area native with a background in communication and project management, he has focused his legislative work on infrastructure, education, and economic opportunity for South Carolina communities.

Judge Kaye Hearn to speak in September |

VOICE is honored to welcome Justice Kaye Hearn as our guest speaker this September. Justice Hearn retired in 2023 after an extraordinary 37-year judicial career — the longest in South Carolina state court history — including 13 years on the SC Supreme Court and 15 years on the SC Court of Appeals, where she was the first woman to serve as chief judge. A Horry County resident with deep local ties, she now practices law with the Wyche Firm and continues to be a leading voice in the legal community. We look forward to hearing her insights at our September luncheon! |

| | Bring Your Resistance Story to the August Meeting |

Participate in a drawing to commemorate Patty Dorian's last Resistance Report for VOICE. Bring to the August 17 meeting something from recent news that indicates cultural resistance—might even be helpful to read over a recent Resistance Report on the VOICE website for an idea of what to look for. Condense your finding into a sentence or two and write it on a card or notepaper, adding your name. We'll combine all these at the August VOICE meeting and the one drawn will be read by the entrant, who will receive a door prize. |

VOICE Update: Progress Toward SC Nonprofit Incorporation |
|
VOICE continues moving steadily toward formal incorporation as a South Carolina nonprofit. On July 27th, our Steering Committee met to thoroughly review and finalize our Bylaws and Articles of Incorporation — a significant step forward. Those documents are now with an attorney for informal review, after which we'll be ready to file with the SC Secretary of State.
We're hoping to raise $500 to help cover the legal review costs associated with this process. If you're able to contribute, you can reach out to Ellen at [email protected], or bring cash or a check to Monday's VOICE luncheon. Thank you for being part of this important work! |

With the midterms approaching, the Brennan Center for Justice released a new guide addressing voter concerns about the possible presence of federal agents at polling places this fall. The guide's message is clear: federal law prohibits armed federal agents from being present at, or interfering with, elections, and voters have concrete steps they can take to prepare — from checking their voter registration status early to knowing their rights if approached by law enforcement while voting. |
