This episode features the authors of a award-winning publication on gender and teamwork in engineering education: Sandra Ireri Cruz Moreno and Shannon Chance (Technological University Dublin), recipients of the "Best Research Paper" award at the SEFI 2025 Conference. Their work explores the long-standing underrepresentation of female students in engineering and examines how the growing use of project- and problem-based learning (PBL) reshapes power dynamics and influences their lived experiences in collaborative team settings.

| | SEFI Regional Event 2026 - Education For Sustainable Development |
|
On 18–19 June 2026, the Universidade de Aveiro hosted the SEFI Regional Event, organised within the scope of the exploratory project “eee4SD – empathic engineering education for sustainable development”, doi: 10.54499/2023.13074.PEX, funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT).
Speakers examined how sustainability, empathy, and human‑centred approaches can be better integrated into engineering education. Keynotes by Diana Bairaktarova and Emanuela Tilley highlighted the role of socio‑emotional learning, care ethics, and leadership in shaping future‑ready engineers. |

| | A new publication from 4TU.CEE "Anticipating the new educational challenges for universities" examines how universities can anticipate new educational challenges, focusing on hybrid learning, digital transformation, and inclusive education design. Written by Emiel van Puffelen and Perry den Brok, the report is based on a review of literature, and it maps the key drivers shaping universities today, from societal and technological change to shifting student needs and new expectations of graduates. It highlights the growing importance of T-shaped skills, sustainability, and the ability to navigate complex, wicked problems. |

EUR‑ACE Connect 2026 Forum |
|
Another successful edition of the “EUR‑ACE Connect 2026 Forum” took place from 4–6 June, hosted by Istanbul Technical University and bringing together international stakeholders from 18 countries. Beyond focusing on the future of engineering education, the forum highlighted a shift from traditional collaboration to co‑creation, learning, developing, and innovating together in response to global challenges.
The next edition of the forum will be held in Dublin, Ireland, between 3-4 June 2027. |

Girls Go STEM Student Challenge |

The edition of Girls Go STEM Student Challenge 2026, invites girls aged 14–19 across Europe to tackle the pressing issue of space debris and the sustainability of Earth’s orbit. Participants are challenged to develop a creative concept, translate it into a compelling video, and propose innovative ways to keep space clean and safe. Selected teams will be invited to present their ideas at the EIT Women and Girls in STEM Forum in Prague this November, connecting with an international community of peers and experts. The submission deadline is 27 July at 13:00 CET. |

As a new informal expert group, it will bring together around 20 members from industry, education, and policy to provide strategic advice on skills needs and innovative STEAM approaches. With a focus on strengthening collaboration between education and STEM-intensive sectors, and addressing emerging priorities such as the circular economy, the panel aims to better align talent development with labour market demands.
