It feels good to be back in the newsletter after a couple of months without one — and there is certainly plenty happening across the Taieri!

One of the things I’ve loved recently is seeing the Mini Mosgiel Memories project grow. What started as an idea for a wonderful oral history project, we decided to begin with something small — and so, a little map of Gordon Road was born. And when we say little, we mean it takes up five large corflute boards!

Together with the wonderful people at Taieri Age Connect, it has sparked plenty of nostalgia, stories and memories — and other groups are now keen to join the journey too. It has got us thinking about other ways we can celebrate the stories and character of our community, from murals and museums, to creating a space where we can share exactly this: what’s brewing on the Taieri!

And what an amazing response there has been to the Lions Club of Mosgiel’s glasses collection! The community has really got behind the call for unwanted glasses, and we’re even tempted to create a giant gauge visible from the street so everyone can watch the community collection grow!

If any of this interests you, and you’d like to get involved, offer an idea, share a story, or volunteer, please get in touch anytime.

That’s what makes the Taieri such a special place — people putting their hands up, sharing what they have, and making things happen.

The Otago Regional Council (ORC) is proposing changes to how the costs of Lower Taieri flood protection and drainage schemes are shared between properties that benefit from them.

The proposed changes may affect the rates paid by many Mosgiel-Taieri properties, so it’s worth taking a few minutes to find out how the changes could affect you.

You can:

  • Check how your property’s proposed 2027–28 rates may be affected using ORC’s online rates estimator.

  • Read more about the proposed rating model, scheme boundaries and how rates would be calculated.

  • Make a submission and share your views with ORC.

👉 Find out more, check your proposed rates and make a submission:

Submissions close at 11.59pm on Friday 11 September 2026.

If you live in the Mosgiel-Taieri area, we encourage you to take a look at the proposal and see how it may affect your property.

Looking back on a wonderful Matariki across the Taieri

What a special Matariki season it has been across the Taieri! ✨

From our Taieri Community Matariki Celebration at Taieri College, featuring Taieri College’s wonderful Arts Showcase and a delicious hāngī prepared by Te Whare Tapa Whā o Taiari (now known as Te Kapa Mai Whakaehu), to the Hui Ako at Taieri College, with primary and early childhood kapa haka performances, it has been wonderful to see so many tamariki, rangatahi, whānau and community members coming together.

🎥 Watch the Hui Ako celebrations

Our Shine Together Taieri project saw more than 11 schools and early childhood groups creating and decorating stars inspired by Matariki themes. The stars have brought so much colour and joy to our community spaces — and, honestly, they’re just too beautiful to take down! ⭐

Over the school holidays, we also explored Ururangi, the star associated with the winds, through our Wind Energy Workshop with The Sustainable School. We learned how to make our own wind anemometers while discovering more about Ururangi and the winds we experience here on the Taieri.

And of course, our Matariki static star display in Anzac Park provided a beautiful focal point for the community to enjoy throughout the season.

A huge thank you to everyone who helped make these celebrations possible — the schools, early childhood centres, community groups, whānau, volunteers, performers and everyone who came along and took part.

🌟 Would you be interested in a Taieri Matariki dawn gathering next year? We’d love to hear from you. Get in touch with Taieri Network if you’d like to be involved or have ideas for how we could celebrate Matariki together in 2027.

Minds in Motion in Mosgiel – Staying Active, Connected and Engaged
Antoinette McLean

Alzheimers Otago was delighted to bring the Minds in Motion programme (Cognitive Stimulation Therapy) to Mosgiel, thanks to generous funding of $2,000 from Altrusa International of Taieri Inc.

This free 11-week programme supports people living with mild to moderate dementia through engaging activities that encourage thinking, communication and social connection. Bringing the programme locally to the Taieri community helped make it accessible for people who may not have been able to attend sessions in Mornington.

We are incredibly grateful to Altrusa International of Taieri Inc members, who also provided morning tea catering throughout the programme, and to East Taieri Church for generously providing a venue.

The Mosgiel group of five participants, supported by a facilitator and volunteers, quickly became a warm and supportive community. Sessions included music, discussion, puzzles, reminiscence activities, creative projects and shared morning tea — creating opportunities for laughter, friendship and connection.

Care partners also valued the opportunity for some time to themselves and to connect with others experiencing similar journeys. Most importantly, Minds in Motion created a space where participants felt included, valued and understood.

This programme is a wonderful example of what can be achieved through community collaboration, and we extend our heartfelt thanks to Altrusa International of Taieri Inc and East Taieri Church for helping make it possible.
