Unlock the Power of Learning

Certification 2026

One of the greatest benefits of the Certification Program is the free art education applicants receive throughout their journey. This program is not simply about passing or failing a test—it is about growing as an independent artist and learning how to create artwork you can be truly proud of.

For more than fifty years, the artists who have traveled this path before you have continued to give back by sharing what they have learned. We do this because we want you to succeed. Each year, the MDAs who support this program come together to brainstorm new ways to encourage and educate applicants, helping them develop the skills and confidence needed to successfully complete the Certification process.

As you progress through the CDA and MDA levels, you will begin to understand that Certification is about much more than earning a designation. It is a journey of artistic growth, learning, and personal achievement that strengthens both your skills and your confidence as an artist.

With that said, if you are not taking advantage of the educational resources, articles, and classes available to you, how can you expect to succeed? Certification requires commitment and practice. You have to paint, experiment, and develop your skills.

Learning to mix color effectively, create harmony throughout your palette, understand value relationships, and apply sound design principles are all part of the journey. These are not skills that develop overnight—they are learned through study, practice, and experience.

The Certification Program provides the tools and guidance, but ultimately your growth as an artist depends on the time and effort you invest. The more you learn, practice, and apply what you have been taught, the greater your opportunity for success.

If you submitted your test last year, I encourage you to read your critique carefully—and then read it again. The judges are telling you exactly where your weaknesses are and identifying the concepts that need more attention.

If you would like a better understanding of the comments on your critique, set up a conference with one of the judges who reviewed your submission. Simply email me, and I will connect you with an MDA who can discuss your critique and help clarify the areas where you are struggling.

We also offer a Mentorship Program that pairs you with an MDA who can provide advice, guidance, and encouragement throughout your journey. This is a free service available to every applicant. I am often puzzled that more people do not take advantage of this valuable opportunity.

Remember, we are all volunteers who are committed to helping you succeed. If you want this program to continue and thrive, participation is important. Purchasing a portfolio is the first step, but the real growth comes from painting, learning, and ultimately submitting your work for evaluation. Every submission helps strengthen and support the future of this program.

New Article Added on Color Temperature by Sue Pruett MDA

Image description

All colors are relative to another color; no color stands alone, and color is judged by its relationship to other colors in the painting.

Color has many properties, including temperature, hue, value, and intensity.

Temperature is a way to inject life, energy, and, most importantly, depth into our paintings. The easiest way to visualize color temperature is to think about fire and ice.

How does Temperature relate to color?

Temperature is an attribute of color that describes how warm or cool a color is.  Warm colors contain yellow and red, whereas cool colors contain blue.  All colors, including neutrals and earth tones, have a warm or cool bias.  Warm earth tones are usually preceded by ‘Burnt’, and cool earth tones are preceded by ‘Raw’ ... continued in the article.
