Will there be a Holy Wholly Happy Ending on April 14th? |
|
A reading of The Vicar of Dibley - A Holy Wholly Happy Ending by Richard Curtis and Paul Mayhew-Archer. This is a stage play adapted from the original TV series by Steve Clark, with kind permission of Tiger Aspect Productions.
Vicar Geraldine Granger is approaching a milestone birthday and the parishioners gift her an evening of speed dating to help her find love. Though she is unsuccessful in her search there, a new arrival in the village soon catches her attention. Is there a mutual spark of attraction?
Will Geraldine finally get to walk down the aisle or will the other quirky inhabitants of Dibley mess things up for her? Will she get her holy wholly happy ending? Come along to read or just to listen.
Tuesday April 14th at 7.30 pm (doors open 7 pm). Members Free, others £5 at the door. Vinters Studio 2, 1b Sunnyhill Road, SW16 2UG For more information see our website. |

Explore The Waste Land in May! |
|
The Waste Land is a poem by T. S. Eliot, widely regarded as one of the most important English-language poems of the 20th century and a central work of modernist poetry. Published in 1922, the 434-line poem first appeared in the United Kingdom in the October issue of Eliot’s magazine The Criterion. Among its famous phrases are “April is the cruellest month”, “I will show you fear in a handful of dust”, and “These fragments I have shored against my ruins”.
Critics have said that The Waste Land does not follow a single narrative or feature a consistent style or structure. It shifts between voices of satire and prophecy, and features abrupt and unannounced changes of narrator, location, and time, conjuring a vast and dissonant range of cultures and literatures.
It doesn't exactly sound an easy read, does it? But what is this poem, one of the most famous in the English canon, all about? Come join us to decipher this mammoth poem through a dramatic reading! We will be acting out stanzas and pulling out lines to perform different emotions and truly grasp the intention and mystery behind Elliot's masterpiece.
Whether you like the poem or hate it, we want to see you get your teeth into it!'

A Look Back at Last Month |
|
March's Set Design Masterclass, led by Helen Mason. was also well-attended and well-received. |
|
Here we are, all working on our designs for one or more sets from our favourite play. Many different plays were represented, from Berthold Brecht's The Good Person of Szechuan, to Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest and Nell Gwynn by Jessica Swale.
We then took turn to present our set ideas to the panel (our fellow participants), just as a real set designer would present her designs to the Directing team.
When she isn't directing or designing sets, Helen relaxes by designing costumes, as she did recently for Racine's Phaedra, at Network Theatre. The curtain call shows the attention to detail and the colour harmonies. Perhaps a masterclass for next year? |

Writers' Forum - a New Initiative from STC |
|
Starting on Thursday April 30th (Yes, you read that correctly. Thursday not Tuesday!) |
|
Streatham Theatre Company is proud to launch a Writers Forum that will bring together those who would benefit from joining a group of like-minded creative writers needing support. The STC Writers Forum will be led by Jo Ostrowska, and builds on STC’s support for new writing, such as our regular Streatham Shorts programme. Meeting once a month in venues around Streatham, the forum is for anyone who would like to write or is already writing a script, a story, comedy, poetry, whatever - or still figuring out where their writing will take them. The meet ups will support new writers or writers already writing. A place to share ideas, share their writings, have deadlines and get feedback from other creatives. It could be just the thing a budding writer has been looking for or might help someone overcome their writer's block. Come along and say hello, meet other local people with the same creative mind and who knows, this could be the start of a beautiful relationship1 Each month the time will allow people to share their ideas, their thoughts, their writing. We can set tasks for people to write a piece for the next meeting and know that it can be read out or acted out, and given constructive feedback. It will allow people to know that their work is appreciated and supported within this group.
Thursday April 30th at 7.30 pm (doors open 7 pm). FREE TO ALL Vinters Studio 2, 1b Sunnyhill Road, SW16 2UG For more information see our website.
If you are unable to attend on April 30th, but would like more information, please contact [email protected]. |

Events Programme for 2026 |
|
As you see from Helen's ever-changing graphic, our events are now finalised until July, with Jo's Comedy Masterclass! More information will follow on each event as we get nearer the time. |
|
On Sunday May 10th we’ll be having our stall at Streatham Kite Day on the common. Can you please spare a few hours to help setup, operate or take down our stall? Please contact [email protected] if so. Our August event is still to be confirmed, but we are keeping everything crossed for an exciting announcement soon.
September will see Streatham Shorts, led once again by Yasmin Smith, after her very successful debut last year.
In October we will be reading a script suggested by popular director, Jo Ostrowska, who is also set to lead our Stand-up Comedy Masterclass in July. This will probably be a panto, for production early next year.
With Streatham's Got Talent happening in December as always, we only have a few slots left to fill! |
|

Streatham Hill Theatre Campaign Update |
|
Representatives from STC recently met with the Head of Property and Facilities at Ruach City Church. We discussed the possibility of running tours of the building for the Streatham Festival, as we did last year, and also putting on large- and small-scale shows in the auditorium. Ruach were largely encouraging, but warned us that the building still requires a great deal of work before it is made safe. We will make detailed proposals and await the response. |
