Local showing of The People's Emergency Briefing

Thame is one of many towns and villages across the UK showing a new film presenting the national implications of climate and nature breakdown thanks to the Chinnor & Thame Friends of the Earth and Thame Players.

The showing will take place at 7pm on 10th May 2026 at Thame Players. Tickets just £3

In November 2025, the National Emergency Briefing brought together leading experts to present the latest evidence on the climate and nature crisis to politicians and other influential people in Westminster. That evidence is now on the public record.

The People's Emergency Briefing is a public information initiative to ensure the UK is fully briefed on the climate and nature crisis.

Chinnor and Thame Friends of the Earth will be organizing two follow up sessions open to all: Thursday May 14th, 10.15 - 11.15am , at the Climate Cafe, Chiltern Room, Chinnor Village Centre and Friday 15th May 7.30-9pm , Room 1, Barns Centre , Thame.

Our streets shape how we live!

What if THAME HIGH STREET felt completely different, even just for a day? Our streets can be so much more than entirely for cars.

As part of the global Park(ing) Day movement, 18 parking spaces in the High Street car park will be transformed into creative and vibrant pop-up parks and social spaces; creating greener, safer, more welcoming places for Thame’s community to sit, meet, and connect.

This summer, on Thursday 2nd JULY from 10am to 4pm, Thame will showcase what’s possible when we put people first!

Be part of it: host a space, inspire others, and connect with the community in the heart of Thame.

Thame Verges Survey volunteer request

Thame Town Council have been operating a mowing regime for the verges alongside the “Thame By-pass”. This has been cutting the verges to leave the rear part uncut from first cut in Spring and second cut in late/early Autumn. The edges are close cut more often during the season for walkers and for better sight lines for drivers

In order to see how effective this is in bringing about a resurgence of wildflowers and other pollinating plants a group of volunteers surveys twice each year 4 plots alongside Tythrop Way and Howland Road recording flowering plants and other plants assessing the increase of species. Over the four years of surveying we are noticing increases in flowering plants.

On Friday 29th May and Monday 7th September we will be carrying out Spring and early Autumn surveys. Commencing at 10am and finishing around noon.

Volunteers are welcome to join in.

What is better than one local car share scheme? TWO

There are two car share schemes available to residents locally. One based in Haddenham that will deliver an EV to your front door if you live in Haddenham or Thame, and one that allows you to pick up a Hybrid Car that is located in the Upper High Street Car Park in Thame with very short notice.

First water vole spotted in river in decades

The American mink — a non-native predator introduced to the UK through fur farming in the 20th century — has been a major factor in the 94% decline of native water voles. Since 2023, River Thame Conservation Trust have partnered with the Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust (BBOWT) to deliver a landscape-scale American mink control programme across the Thame catchment.

Thanks to this work, although the River Thame had not seen confirmed, sustained water vole presence since the early 2000s, there were some sightings in late 2025.

Unfortunately the initial funding that supported this work has now come to an end, and despite efforts, further funding has not yet been secured. RTCT is currently exploring alternative ways to maintain and build on this momentum, including support for the volunteer network, equipment and monitoring.

If you would like to help support this vital work to continue there are many ways you can get involved - through volunteering, donations or by attending the Shabbington Ball in September this year.

This Bond-inspired evening takes place on Saturday 19th September in a glamorous marquee in Shabbington, with tickets now on general sale. Guests can expect a sparkling reception, gala dinner, live music and more all in support of two local charities - with RTCT being one. But hurry - there are only a few tickets left.

Plastic Free Communities - the Big Brand Audit

Big Brands are fuelling the plastic crisis; they’ve broken promises, greenwashed consumers, and derailed vital legislation.

To show big brands the power of reuse as an effective instrument for positive change, Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) are bringing back #ReturnToOffender! One of SAS’s original plastic pollution campaign actions. They are aiming to turn up the heat on the UK’s top polluting brands and tell the government it’s time to crack down on those profiting from pollution. This comes following their 2025 Big Brand Audit which involved thousands of volunteers recording what they found during cleans across beaches, rivers, parks and streets throughout the UK. Support Water Saving Week

From May 4th- 8th, Waterwise are celebrating the connection between the water we use every day and the rivers, lakes, and wildlife that depend on it. This year’s theme, Protect Water for Wildlife, is all about turning everyday actions into a real impact for nature.

They’ve made it easy to take part, whether at home or at a work settings, providing a free Water Saving Week resource pack that includes:

A full introduction to the campaign
20 simple water-saving pledges to choose from
5 daily themed activities with videos, insights, and practical actions
Tips to engage your team, household, or community
Ways to keep the momentum going beyond the week

Apply to host a traffic sensor

Oxfordshire County Council’s current offer of free park and ride bus journeys in Oxford will continue until at least the end of May 2026. The continued offer is among a range of travel benefits that will be funded through income from the council’s temporary congestion charge in the city. Read more
