TORG + KFHR Clinical Observership Program - Impact in Action

Image description

We are pleased to share reflections from Mr. Wedajo Tsegaye, Senior MSc Anesthetist from Debre Birhan University, Ethiopia, who is currently participating in the TORG + King Faisal Hospital Rwanda (KFHR) Clinical Observership Program.
This experience highlights the strength of the partnership between The Operating Room Global (TORG) and King Faisal Hospital Rwanda (KFHR) in advancing professional development, knowledge exchange, and excellence in surgical and perioperative care.

We sincerely appreciate the Anesthesia Department and the entire surgical team at KFHR for their mentorship, openness to teaching, and commitment to strengthening global clinical learning.

Below are Mr. Wedajo’s reflections from the first two weeks of the program:

"I came to King Faisal Hospital Rwanda (KFHR) through a collaboration with The Operating Room Global (TORG) to participate in a four-week clinical observership program in anesthesia. I have now completed the first two weeks of this experience and will remain for another two weeks.

The observership has already been a highly enriching and inspiring professional experience.

During this time, I have had the privilege of working closely with the anesthesia team at King Faisal Hospital Rwanda. From the very beginning, the team has been incredibly welcoming, supportive, and committed to teaching. Their openness to sharing knowledge, discussing clinical cases, and explaining their clinical decision-making processes has made this observership both educational and motivating.

Throughout these two weeks, I have been exposed to a wide variety of surgical procedures and anesthesia practices. Observing different cases across multiple surgical specialties has significantly broadened my clinical perspective. I have been able to witness various anesthesia techniques, perioperative patient assessments, intraoperative monitoring strategies, and postoperative management approaches in a high-standard tertiary care setting.

One of the most valuable aspects of this experience has been observing the use of advanced monitoring technologies and evidence-based anesthesia practices. I have also had the opportunity to learn about complex case management, including multidisciplinary discussions and collaborative decision-making. This collaborative environment highlights the importance of teamwork in ensuring patient safety and achieving optimal surgical outcomes.

_In addition to clinical exposure in the operating theatre, I have benefited greatly from the academic atmosphere within the department. Participating in morning discussions and case-based learning sessions has provided deeper insights into anesthesia management, critical thinking in perioperative care, and the importance of continuous professional development.

Furthermore, this observership has allowed me to compare different clinical practices and healthcare systems, helping me appreciate innovative approaches and high standards of patient care implemented at King Faisal Hospital Rwanda. The experience has strengthened my professional motivation and inspired me to continue improving my knowledge and skills in anesthesia practice and education.

I am sincerely grateful to the anesthesia team at King Faisal Hospital Rwanda and to the collaboration with The Operating Room Global (TORG) for providing such a valuable and meaningful learning opportunity. I look forward to continuing my learning journey during the remaining two weeks of this observership and gaining even more insight into advanced anesthesia practice."

Thank you to King Faisal Hospital Rwanda for hosting and mentoring the cohort 2026, and congratulations to Mr. Wedajo and the entire TORG + KFHR Clinical Observership Cohort as they continue this impactful journey.
