March News from Knit & Spin

March has arrived, bringing longer days, fresh inspiration, and a special celebration for fiber lovers: National Crochet Month.

Crochet’s exact origins are a little uncertain, but historians believe it rose to popularity in Europe during the 19th century. Some trace its roots to earlier chain-loop embroidery traditions from the Middle East, while others connect it to Irish crochet lace, which became especially important during the Irish Potato Famine as a way for families to earn income. However it began, crochet has grown into a beloved craft that blends creativity, relaxation, and community, which is something we celebrate every time we gather together.

A Special Project to Celebrate

Floyd Peplinski just finished crocheting a beautiful baby blanket for his third granddaughter, who is due next month. The pattern is free on the Universal Yarn website and is called the Inchworm Baby Blanket.

A Little Green for March

Speaking of Ireland, St. Patrick’s Day is just around the corner on March 17. Whether you’re casting on something green, crocheting a shamrock motif, or spinning up some emerald fiber, March is the perfect time to play with cheerful shades of green.

If you’re looking for a quick seasonal project, small shamrock appliqués, cozy green hats, or striped scarves are all fun ways to bring a little luck of the Irish into your yarn basket.
