KJ6ER Antennas

March 2026

Introducing the New KJ6ER Antennas Family Summary Document Comparing All Current and Future Antenna Designs Coming in 2026!

Dear Fellow Portable Antenna Geeks 😀

By popular request, I have created a brand new KJ6ER Antennas Family Summary which features all of my current quarterwave and halfwave antenna designs, as well as teasers on three new antenna designs coming out in 2026! As the antenna family has grown recently, users have requested a bigger picture perspective on all antenna designs and how to choose one over another for a deployment.

Not only are the antenna designs summarized in both single-element and two-element tables including key performance specifications and quick links to the free PDFs, but I am also introducing a new type of chart to easily compare all the antennas - Radiation Sweeps. Much like an SWR Sweep features SWR versus frequency on an x-y axis (cartesian coordinates), these Radiation Sweeps feature forward gain (dBi) versus radiation angle elevation off the ground.

If you do not have the time, ability or interest to build your own KJ6ER antenna, you can purchase a beautifully assembled handmade antenna system as well as accessories on EtsyThis month, we are introducing the HOA CAMO Kits! Wrap your own PVC antenna tubes with the HOA CAMO Kit including 2 rolls of CAMO wraps (your choice of forest green or sandy forest). Or buy an HOA CAMO PERformer Kit with the 2 CAMO wraps, a black 6-band tuned linked wire radial pair and 2 dark green elevation poles for your existing PERformer at home.

If you want the whole package with the PERformer antenna included, buy the HOA CAMO PERformer Antenna System which includes a complete 7-band PERformer with 17' whip, a 16" stainless steel spike, a black wire radial pair2 CAMO wraps of your choice, and 2 dark green elevation poles. More than 160 products have already been sold at the
J-Systems Store on Etsy over the past 8 months with over 40 perfect 5-star reviews from buyers!

Traditional polar coordinate charts generated by the 4NEC2 computer model that are featured in all of my antenna design PDFs are very useful at showcasing the radiation pattern for a single antenna. It helps visualize how the antenna could radiate at increasing elevations, but the polar chart can get very cluttered when trying to compare 5-7 antennas at once!

Looking below at radiation intensity versus elevation off the ground will help you select which antenna to choose for potential Global / DX reach, as well as Continental, Regional or NVIS / Skip Zone reach under the right conditions. As I have mentioned before, each antenna has its own best use case, so this chart should provide insights into which antenna could be optimal for your deployment. It can also introduce you to other antenna designs you may not have been aware of.

KJ6ER Antennas Family

The new KJ6ER Antennas Family is also available as a PowerPoint PPT file which you can download to PowerPoint on your computer and view in presentation mode. The advantage of this additional file is that you can click your mouse to view each antenna one-at-at time on the Radiation Sweep charts to more easily compare your favorite antenna design(s) to others. When you access it on my Google cloud, it wants to play it in a Google slide viewer which does not work well. Instead, download the file to your computer by clicking File / Download / Microsoft PowerPoint (.pptx) and view it in your own PowerPoint presentation mode.

This Month's KJ6ER Antenna Heroes

Each month I feature videos of hams talking about their own implementation of a KJ6ER antenna including how they built and deployed it, as well as how it performed. This month, we'll take a more international look at 3 POTA activators: 1 in Canada and 2 in Italy. I also include a bonus antenna hero here in the U.S..!

VE9CF PERformer Video

Stuart Crawford VE9CF, of New Brunswick, Canada has an informative YouTube ham radio channel called OUT N' ABOOT with VE9CF. In a video recently posted, he ventured to an historic CF-101 Memorial Arcraft National Memorial (POTA CA-6531) where he deployed a PERformer Antenna System in the snow and completed over 600 SSB QSOs over 4 hours on the 15M and 20M bands. Amazingly, he got 40 countries during this activation and proudly says, "anytime you get more countries than U.S. states, it's always a good day at the park". Watch this fantastic activation and subscribe to his YouTube channel.

As you know, ham radio with POTA is a growing hobby around the world, not just in North America! Here are 2 Italian activators also using the KJ6ER PERformer!

Emilio (Emix) Migliorino IU8QTM, of Sessa Cilento in southern Italy is an active supporter of the PERformer Antenna System. He wrote me, "your PERformer antenna has quickly become my favorite for portable operations. It’s simple, effective, and perfect for the way I like to operate outdoors." He has inspired many other Italian activators, like his friend Ricky below, to use the PERformer. In this English-subtitled video, he introduces the antenna antenna design, build and deployment to his fellow Italians with construction tips and lots of enthusiasm! Enjoy this great video and subscribe to his YouTube channel.

Riccardo (Ricky) Bossio IU1PZC, of Valenza, Italy activated the Parco Le Folaghe Conversation Area
(IT-0787) in northern Italy during a cold day in November with the PERformer Antenna System. He was running 5 watts QRP with his good radio friend Paolo Longhi IU2KBN and lots of warm Italian pizza. Ricky turned on his FT-891 and immediately worked several US stations on SSB! In this English auto-dubbed video, he shares his PERformer deployment and gives credit to his good friend Emix Migliorino IU8QTM for his inspiration! Watch this entertaining activation and subscribe to his YouTube channel.

ANTENNA HERO BONUS: One of my favorite U.S. YouTube channels is by Michael Martens KB9VBR. Last year we sat down for a long interview on the birth of the PERformer antenna. On a recent camping activation, he demonstrated how he could deploy another one of his favorite KJ6ER antennas, the Challenger, in 90 seconds! This brief video shows how he does it and gets on the air quickly. So many of you have written me and also told me this is why you like using the Challenger Halfwave. Enjoy this short video and subscribe to his YouTube channel.

KJ6ER Heroes Program

KJ6ER Beta Testers Program

As many of you know, I introduced a KJ6ER Antennas Beta Testers program last month to encourage interested hams to get draft PDFs of my new antennas in advance, build and deploy them, and then summarize their experiences in video. if you would like to become a KJ6ER Antenna Beta Tester, send me a message. Your early review of my draft PDF, antenna design and build helps me improve the content quality in the PDF, as well as the construction and deployment process. As I mentioned above, I have 3 new antennas coming out this year and need your help!
