“Never wound a snake. Kill it”

Harriet                                                                --Harriet Tubman

We made it!!!!!!!!!!! I don't know about you, but 2025 tried to get me outta here. I wouldn't let it. And next year, I am not wounding shit - I'm killing it! Let's go.

My Year in a Photo

My niece brought my entire family so much joy this whole year. It is a wonder to watch a little person grow, and to be part of the village she grows with. More so than any venture capital or startup stuff, being an aunt has truly changed my life -- and made me appreciate my entire family so much!

My Year: A Whole Hot Mess that I Needed

I did so much right and so much wrong this year, I don't even truly know where to start. I started one of the most important journeys that I will ever take in my life this year, and continued one of the most meaningful. I lost and I won and I kept going and I almost lost it! Here is a little recap of my year.

This year, my partner, Dr. Brahm Rhodes, and I began fundraising for Fictive Ventures Fund I. Fictive Ventures is a community-driven venture fund that harnesses the collective wisdom of our network to create wealth-building opportunities through venture capital while backing founders of untapped potential. We are doing the unprecedented in venture capital. We are backing BLACK startup founders with a bench of all BLACK investors beside us. This will be one of the first venture funds in history to raise from all Black investors, and I could not be more proud. And more exhausted. I have been to a dozen cities, spoken to hundreds of startup founders, and met over a thousand potential investors this year alone. The road is bumpy and chaotic, but I am floored at what we have been able to accomplish. We just filed the paperwork with our fund administrator to complete our first investment, and we have over 6 Black angel investors co-investing alongside us. It is a small investment, and has not been without disappointment due to investors dropping out, but I am honored to be able to bring tens of thousands of dollars to a dynamic Black startup founder to give him a bit more fuel to continue to innovate in 2026, and I take nothing for granted. This deal is exemplary of everything about Fictive. Fund I is small -- just $5 million -- but the impact of the ecosystem that we are creating is beyond measure.

Fictive is one of the most important things I did in 2025, but it is certainly not the only thing!

In 2025, I:

*Taught my niece how to say "stinky butt"

*Introduced dozens of investors and service providers to startup founders in Atlanta through The PIT

*Invested thousands of dollars into Black startup founders

*Lost a friend at the age of 35 due to the flu/cardiac arrest

*Renewed my platinum status with American Airlines

*Supported hundreds of Black-owned businesses in dozens of cities

*Brought thousands of smiles to my boyfriends face

*Gotten 40+ Black investors across the country to say YES to Fictive Ventures and me

*Maintained my sanity in Trump's America

*Propagated 16 plants

*Spent Thanksgiving with my family and the love of my life and I didn't have to cook at thing!

*Downloaded and set up the YNAB app to start getting my budget life together

*Gained 11 pounds, which will be lost in 2026!

*Sent out this newsletter, pretty inconsistently, but at least some of the time

*Published a piece in The Grio

*Became closer to 40 than 30

*Went viral telling people about how dumb Harvard Law students are

*Ended the year feeling truly happy for the first time in a long time

The Best Blog Post I Ever Wrote

I wrote this piece after Lanny & Bianca, founders of Actively Black, crafted the most important fashion show ever put on at New York Fashion Week. It was never published, so I decided to bring it to you as a blog post, because what they did, in all it's beautiful BLACKNESS, must be praised and screamed from the rooftops in 2025!

Students Without Mothers is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping high school students without mothers help themselves by empowering them to continue their education. The organization’s main purpose is to provide scholarships for college-bound high school students who are without their mothers due to death or other unfortunate circumstances. I am no longer on the board, but I still support the organization whole-heartedly, and I hope you will join me in supporting more students through college.
