Our Production Season is Wrapping Up

Image description

Thanks for all your orders and support for another year! We are all wrapped up with meat chickens, turkeys and beef for the year and just have pigs left to finish growing till November. Now the race is on to finish fencing and other infrastructure projects before the ground freezes. And once it does, we will be enjoying a slower pace through the winter.

Our turkeys finished beautifully this year and we were able to personalize our labels for the first time.

Chicken "Tractors" all packed away for another winter. We set them upright and tie them to a shed so their flat roofs don't collapse under snow.

We were able to replace the plastic on the hens winter housing, our big greenhouse.

Farm Tours

Back in August we hosted another day of farm tours for the public, through Alberta Open Farm Days. While attendance was low and the weather wasn't great, it was a good excuse to get the yard all cleaned up and the grass mowed 😄. Thanks to all who did come out to see our place, the animals, and how we raise them.

For next year we are thinking of doing a farm tour earlier in the summer, possibly in mid to late June. We have heard from a number of you that the August date doesn't work well because of vacations or other summer plans, so we are hoping that more of you would be able to attend just as school is wrapping up but summer plans aren't in full swing yet. Feel free to let us know your thoughts on this, as well as any ideas you have of what you might like to see, do, or learn at one of our farm tours.

On October 23, 2025, under the cover of darkness, Operation McEggers began at 2100 hours. It involved 1 old pickup truck, 1 skidsteer, 1 borrowed tractor, 2 eggmobiles, 2 farmers and 300 sleepy laying hens. Everything went almost to plan, and the farmers were quick to adapt, (add more equipment,) and change tactics when the situation on the ground changed.

And just as quickly as it started, it was all over.

Casualties: 0

Hens moved into winter housing: 300

Mission accomplished!

Taking orders for an early spring batch of Pigs

We are planning on raising a small group of pigs over the winter so that they would be ready to butcher in early spring. My (Norwin's) mom likes to have a variety of sausages on hand for summer BBQs, so she is always hoping for a butcher pig in the spring. So if you too, like sausages and pork chops for the grill in the summer, or you simply love pork, consider placing an order. We won't have many available so order soon.

Slaughter Licence Update

In September the Alberta goverment issued a survey for all licence holders to fill out. We filled it out and are waiting to hear back as to the results of this survey. We are also part of a group of license holders brought together by the National Farmers Union who are trying to voice our concerns with the  Alberta government directly. We rely on this license for slaughtering all of our poultry, pork and beef, and it would be a major blow to our farm if the program was severely restricted, like the government is proposing. We'll keep you updated as we know more.
