Gov. Mike Braun’s self-proclaimed “agnosticism” on the death penalty evaporated the moment he signed off on another execution. Denying clemency for Roy Lee Ward doesn’t make Braun neutral — it makes him complicit. The governor loves to say lawmakers should decide Indiana’s death penalty policy, but that’s hard to swallow when he’s already turned the switch back on for the state’s third execution in under a year. Every execution is a choice, and Braun’s choice wasn’t about justice — it was about political optics and appeasing the tough-on-crime crowd.

Indiana’s death penalty is a financial, moral, and constitutional disaster masquerading as justice. The state has spent millions on expired lethal injection drugs, nearly four times more per case than life without parole, all for a punishment proven to deter nothing but compassion. Even the “humane” method — pentobarbital — leaves inmates convulsing and gasping, a macabre spectacle shielded from full media scrutiny. Braun could have stood on principle and spared Hoosiers the cruelty and waste. Instead, he chose symbolism over sense, and blood over backbone.
