When I Am Among The Trees

by Mary Oliver

When I am among the trees,
especially the willows and the honey locust,
equally the beech, the oaks and the pines,
they give off such hints of gladness.
I would almost say that they save me, and daily.

I am so distant from the hope of myself,
in which I have goodness, and discernment,
and never hurry through the world
but walk slowly, and bow often.

Around me the trees stir in their leaves
and call out, "Stay awhile."
The light flows from their branches.

And they call again, "It's simple," they say,
"and you too have come
into the world to do this, to go easy, to be filled
with light, and to shine."

December 1st I arrived in the Midwest to pack the show at the Overture Galleries and bring it back to NYC. Snow arrived 2 days before I did, creating a sumptuous winter wonderland. On the morning of my departure from the Chicago area, I witnessed one of the most stunning solar arcs I've ever seen. This photo is a poor representation of it. Huge, occurring just after sunrise, it wavered, shimmered and astounded anyone who stopped to witness it.

A few minutes later, I pulled into a gas station to ready the car for the trek across Indiana and Ohio. I opened the hood to add windshield washer fluid. This stowaway was tucked up under the hood, warm from the cars heat. I gently lifted him/her out, thinking for more than a few seconds if she/he might ride more comfortably in the car interior back to NYC. It bolted - exploded from my arms and ran away. When she/he got under the hood is a mystery, it may have been riding there for a good 150 miles.

I wish it well. Finding a new home in Wintertime is no easy task.

What if you like my work but feel you cannot afford to purchase it?

I believe art should live in the world, not only where resources concentrate. I’m continuing a project rooted in the solidarity economy called Pay What You Wish.

I’m offering a small selection of original works through a pay what you can model. You choose the price that feels accessible and honest for you. This is an ongoing experiment in trust, care, and shared value — an invitation to collect art without financial barriers.

Future expansions may include other projects that allow artworks to move through many homes and lives. For the time being, find a new selection in each newsletter.

Over the past months I've watched as the art market groaned through anxiety, contraction and distraction. I have never felt a firm fit of my work within a capitalist economy. Like a round peg in a square space, there have been many points where the fit is uncomfortable, disagreeable, discouraging.

Email me using the button below or by replying to this newsletter with the artwork name and the price you are willing to pay to claim this offer.
First come first serve.

The works above are available on a sliding scale, $50 - $350 each. No questions asked: choose the price that is right for you and get in touch with me. (Framing is not included.) Sizes vary slightly, each about 12 x 11." These are watercolors on Karst or prepared paper.

If this resonates with you — or someone you know — I hope you’ll join me in imagining new ways art can circulate: generously, collectively, and close to home.
