Enduring the Blitz

In the four months since we alerted you to the slaerous attack we had come under, so much has happened. We kept expecting things to resolve so that we could report back to you, but the legal mess dragged on beyond all expectations.

A combination of a very lazy DA, a small-town court and judge, and Brian's accuser working behind the scenes to prevent a defamation suit, combined to slow the gears of "justice" to a near standstill that lasted until the first week of August.

Against this backdrop of waiting for vindication or at least an end to the nightmare, we were dealing with some pretty severe setbacks in Brian's dad's condition, camping on our back porch due to our kitchen being torn out in a remodel that lasted months, visits to supporters, training Movement-makers in Angola, hosting two sets of missionary guests that we had agreed to before any of this (with no kitchen), a trip to Manitoba to attend the wedding of a young cross-cultural couple we did premarital counseling with, writing and publishing a new book (more later) and loads of ministry housekeeping (overdue board meeting, change of accountant, late corporate tax filings, and a complete review of three years of finances). Whew!

We thought it was over when the DA agreed to throw out the original unprovable charges and insisted on a ridiculously false misdemeanor harassment charge. Since it was just a maneuver to get something he could hang a no-contact order on (which his "witness" was insisting upon to protect her from a lawsuit for destroying our reputation with Facebook lies), we decided it was better to give-in and end this lengthy ordeal than fight in court. Especially since court costs were already mounting. Brian signed the plea deal but insisted on "no contest" rather than pleading guilty to harassing someone he'd never met. Our lawyer assured us that it was over with payment of costs and signature. For the first time in months we could breathe again.

Then, inexplicably, the judge sent it back. Turns out, she never accepts "no contest" pleas -- only innocent or guilty. So, we were faced with an expensive fight before a possibly hostile judge or just pleading guilty to harassment. Brian signed and it was finally over.

Desperate Appeal Bears Fruit

Our last letter was sent out to you with our heart in our throats. We felt sure that many would desert us, but the need to be surrounded by prayer was stronger than our fears and the enemy's whispers.

Imagine our joy and surprise when we found the "unsubscribe" rate for that letter was almost non-existent! It went out to a huge list, many of who we have never met, or met just once at a class or booktable. Only five unsubscribed from the newsletter and follow-up reveled none were for content reasons. An average unsubscribe rate for our letter is about 25. This letter was the lowest ever! God was showing us that He was upholding us. Then the supportive emails began to pour in. Thank you so much, your encouragements were like water to our parched souls! Several gave big gifts as well. One new friend paid for all our court fees!  Jesus is so GOOD!

Heal Us, Lord!

"Prepare a guest room for me, because I hope to be restored to you in answer to your prayers."  Philemon 1:22

Even though it is still more than two months in the future, there is one trip that dominates our thoughts and fills us with longing. On the day our ordeal finally resolved, we realized that we were so beaten up and wounded by all that had come against us, we would be worth very little in ministry unless we took some time to heal. Specifically, we needed a debrief and compassionate counsel without having to juggle the day-to-day concerns of home and ministry. Praying that God would lead us to the "still waters" where He would heal our hearts, Brian discovered a place in Europe that seemed to fit the bill exactly. Restored & Renewed Ministry, a sanctuary for the weary missionaries, have a 12th Century abbey, Château de Clairefontaine. This oasis in Polaincourt-et-Clairefontaine, France, is dedicated to restoring wounded missionaries. They are funded by God's people so they can offer room, board, and counseling free of charge (similar retreats in the USA charge missionaries as much as $1000 per day or require large donations).  Chateau ClaireFontaine Website

Reaching out, we found that they had an opening for us in November.

We've worked in missions since 1987 -- 38 years. Aside from a few rushed days at LinkCare in Fresno after a painful experience in Barbados, we have never taken time away to experience a real healing and debriefing. It took being almost destroyed to bring this to our attention.

Please put the dates on your phone or calendar and lift us up for the entire journey: Nov. 5th thru 20th. We are trusting that the Shepherd will meet us there, heal, restore, and forever change us.

We were able to book or flights with savings and air miles. If the Lord leads you to help, please consider giving toward this ministry, which is giving so much to us.

Give to Restored and Renewed  ("Brian & Louise Hogan" in the comment line).

Unengaged Peoples Project Update

We were assigned a new people group, due to the fact that we've managed to get several of our earlier groups off of the Unengaged list  (though still unreached). A team of Mongolians from YWAM Ulaanbaatar has already made contact!  This is so exciting! See below for our new group, and please pray for them.

Brian completed writing a new training manual for those wishing to launch movements. It is ultra simple and designed to be easily passed along to non-literate disciples. The main content is the 26 Keys to multiplying churches that George Patterson taught us in 1988. This book pairs these essential keys with stick-figure illustrations and real-life examples drawn from our work in Mongolia. Louise did all of the original artwork for the book. I would be happy to send any of you who request it a copy for any donation you may choose to give.

Just email me a request with your mailing address. You can also get it from Amazon. If you do, please leave a review as it has none at this point.

There is so much more I want to fill you in on, but this letter is already too long. If you want to know details about the following:

Brian's Dad (hospice and 90th Birthday)

Manitoba Wedding car trip

Charleston visit (with Supporters)

Houseguests

Angola training

Upcoming travel
