FLH Hounds Excel at CSHS

FLH hounds earned several top honors at the Central States Hound Show! Iceman won single entered and top overall dog hound. Hustle won single entered bitch hound, with Ivy and Impact finishing in the top four. Hustle went on to win top overall bitch hound, then she and Hollis won the couple of bitches class, with Ivy and Impact getting second. Easton took fourth in the performance trial class, and Dehner took second. Hustle took best overall hound for the day with Iceman taking reserve. What awesome hounds we have! Additionally, MFH and incoming huntsman Teresa somehow won the horn blowing contest.

Thank you to Jessamyn Jempson, Lucy Hirsch, Nick Redman, and Laura Allen for stepping up to show hounds; to MVH for hosting the event this year; to Steve Thomas and the kennel staff for creating the pack we have; and to the FLH members who came to support us.

Kennel Update

Both of our regular kennel staff are "back on duty," with huntsman Teresa covering days as needed. Sadly, we lost FLH Eagle due to an unexpected decline related to an existing medical condition. Thank you to staff for ensuring that he had the care he needed. Otherwise, our hounds are doing well.

Farewell Ride at McGuire's

June 14 will be our farewell ride at the McGuire's fixture. Beginning at 10am we will have various guided trail rides, munchies, and camaraderie. LFA is providing meats. Please bring a side, app, or dessert to share.

Committee Updates

Fixture Development

Staver's - East of Easton: Currently no access to the surrounding properties due to hunting leases held by Rodger Evans. An assessment of Staver’s only is planned for hound exercising (on foot/mounted) with potential trail work.

Winchester Area: Potential for acreage suitable for drag hunting. Coordination to pursue further is underway.

Division - Flint Hills: Supportive of two hunts per season but not expanding beyond that.

Flint Hills Hunt: FLH members are welcome to join FHH Hunts and we will be organizing FLH/FHH joint hunts. These can be as frequent as members are interested in going to that location.

Land near Creviston's: Primary landowner of surrounding area declined to allow foxhunting on the property.

Fort Leavenworth Installation: Hound training/exercising must be "on leash." Mounted hound activity is not allowed. Other riding activities are permitted.

Pony Express Conservation Area (MO): Not suitable due to group size and trail restrictions.

Union County Bird Dog Ranch: Owner contact FLH as a result of recommendation from an NHH member. Located in Thayer Iowa, 150 miles North of Kansas City. It is a mixed use facility made up of row crops, hay fields, timber and CRP with enough acreage for drag hunting. They host AKC Pointing Breed Field Trials and Hunt Tests, Upland Game Hunting and Deer Hunting. We are following up.

KS Public Lands: Initial contact of POC has been made by Ted S.

Committee will be meeting virtually on Monday, May 19.

Non-Hunt Activity and Membership/Recruitment

Scheduling of kick-off meetings is underway.

Staff/Hound Training

Hound walking will commence Saturday, May 16. A trail ride to familiarize staff with the Flint Hills Hunt/Settler's Acre fixture will be scheduled in the next couple months.

Receive Recognition for FLH Volunteerism

As FLH is part of the Fort Leavenworth Family, Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (FMWR) program, members of the Fort Leavenworth Hunt can record and receive recognition from Fort Leavenworth for volunteer hours spent supporting the hunt. Recording volunteer hours is an individual choice and not a requirement, but is strongly supported by the FLH Masters. Recording hours both allows for individual recognition by Fort Leavenworth FMWR and for Fort Leavenworth leadership to understand the significant time contributed by our members to make FLH successful as an organization. The guide to the right will take you through the process of registering, applying for positions, and recording your hours. Please contact FLH Master Candy Smith with any questions.

LAC Information

Image description

A Local Access Credential (LAC) allows civilians to enter Fort Leavenworth without having to stop at the visitor center each time. Members needing to obtain or renew a LAC must complete the Applicant Information and Criminal History sections of the LAC application (click image to download) and submit it to Master Candy Smith. You may also email your info to Candy or provide it over the phone (913-948-0189) and she will complete the form for you. She will then submit it to the FMWR Director, who will sign it and forward it to the Visitor Center (VCC) for processing. Current processing time is 2.5–3 weeks. Renewing LAC holders, please note this is a new form.

For those who need only temporary access to Ft. Leavenworth (for the hunt ball, for example), please register for a one-day pass online.
