Issue 67: May 2025

Lost, Found, Lost, Found...?

There is only the fight to recover what has been lost
And found and lost again and again: and now, under conditions
That seem unpropitious.

— T. S. Eliot

Editorial

Dear friend,

My theme refers to the ongoing cycle of losing and hopefully finding steadiness, meaning, connection and more. Perhaps this repeated process is designed to build up our resilience? If so, I'd love to tell the designer how arduous this can be...

This issue will hopefully give you some resources which will nourish you through the cycle.

With blessings,

Alan

Feature blog: Hospicing in the ruins: what’s really going on?

The new, ultra-fluid form of reality we have to navigate requires us to find very different forms of meaning and purpose. This blog post about a recent webinar offers some useful pointers.

The Raft: wisdom for stormy times

This exciting new project has evolved from the Soul Resilience Network, and is now being led by Liam Kavanagh and Jadzia Tedeschi, with Alan Heeks advising.

The Raft is a new network that aims to bring together people who want to live in a society which values meaning beyond individual and material concerns. Practical skills, spiritual inquiry, and active citizenship are all necessary dimensions of the engaged contemplative approach we are cultivating together. We want to offer a sense of fellowship, a range of ways to explore, and a well-rounded community that can deepen together, sowing resilience before collapse, and growing towards a sound civilisation.

A mix of online and in-person events is being offered, including the Rising Tide series and the Meaning Harvest group, details under Events. See new website here.

T. S. Eliot has his say

Deep, cryptic poetry from 1944

For decades, Four Quartets by T. S. Eliot has been my favourite poem. If you’re seeking wisdom on the meaning of life, death, and lots more, give it a try. Even after dozens of readings, I’m far from fully understanding it, but that’s reality for you. Here are a few selections you may find helpful. Read more

Natural Happiness Seed 4: Co-creativity

Most people are trying to shape their lives amid more uncertainty than they can handle: co-creative skills make this easier. It’s about finding solutions with other people’s needs, with apparent obstacles, with uncertainty, balancing them with your own needs and hopes. This is the fourth, central principle in my Seven Seeds of Natural Happiness, and it will help you with all of them. Read more

Bonus blog: Deep peace can still be found

An Easter retreat on Caldey Island

I marked Easter with a five-day retreat at Caldey Abbey, a Cistercian monastery on a small island off the Pembrokeshire coast. It’s hard to evoke the depth of devotional atmosphere on an island with a monastic focus for 1500 years, and in an Abbey with several services daily for 115 years. It’s as if the spiritual force of gravity is halved: divine presence is very present here.
The services are beautiful: mostly in English, with a lot of exquisite plain chant, including psalms. The daily cycle begins with Vigils at 3.30am, followed by Lauds at 6am, then five more services before Compline at 7.30pm. I decided to excuse myself from Vigils, being in my seventies, although most of the brothers were my age or older. Read more
