Hello from Renewable Bermagui!

Hello from all of us at Renewable Bermagui!

We hope you’ve been enjoying summer and are ready to get involved in more exciting events we’re planning for this year. We know we've been a bit quiet for the past few months, but definitely not idle - our team has been busy shaping up some new projects and initiatives. These are directly informed by the results of what you told us in last year’s "Community Energy Survey" - so first of all, we want to share these survey results with you.

2024 Winter Community Energy Survey Results

A big thank you to those of you who responded to the survey, either online or in person at our launch event. Here's what we learnt:

Who responded?

  • 56 responses in total
  • 60% from Bermagui, 13% from Wallaga Lake, 5% from Coolagolite, and the remainder from surrounding towns
Total of 56 survey responses and where they are from

Property types

  • 87% of survey respondents were home owners
  • 2 responses were from commercial property owners
  • 83% of respondents said they did not own or operate a business
  • 4 respondents answered questions about the energy solutions at work

We are really hoping that the future work we do will be relevant and useful for home and business owners as well as renters - and include workshops and information on energy efficiency measures that you can take as a renter.

Level of interest (in renewable energy and energy efficiency)

Level of interest in renewable energy and energy efficiency

We asked you to rate your interest in renewable energy and energy efficiency from 0 to 4, and were excited to to see high levels of interest in our community (keeping in mind that those who filled out the survey were probably particularly 'keen-beans'!).

    Energy solutions used at home

Energy solutions used at home by survey respondents

Other home energy solutions people added to the list included:

    • Green Catch Power switch
    • Offset power use by wind investment
    • Devi in ceiling heating (Swedish 13 amp)
    • Solar water pumps/ solar to bottom element of water tank
    • Heater "throw" and electric blankers
    • DC ceiling fans
    • Using the "clothes horse" instead of dryer
    • Slow combustion fire fed from wood on own property (for water, bathroom floor and towel rail heating)
    • Reducing power consumption

    Energy solutions used at work

Most of our respondents skipped this question or selected "N/A - I don't operate a business", but we did get four responses that listed the following energy solutions at work:

    • Reverse cycle airconditioning (all four responses used this)
    • Solar PV
    • Battery (Powerwall or similar)
    • Electric vehicle for business use
    • Heat pump hot water system
    • Upgraded insulation and/or double glazing
    • Solar powered equipment

    Suggestions for future focus

We asked you what you would like Renewable Bermagui to focus on next, and what is most important to you. In the summary below, we show the percentage of survey respondents that marked each area of focus as important to them.

Here are the five most selected areas of focus from the survey responses:

    What we're doing next

    • We’re planning a series of workshops to be held in Bermagui this year, focused on renewable energy, energy cost savings, and other key sustainability issues. These will run regularly throughout 2025 and into 2026 - keep an eye out for the program, which we are planning to release in the next few weeks.
    • We’re working on launching our website, which will help us share the latest information to help make your home or business more energy efficient, and to keep you up to date on relevant events, technology and news.
    • We’ve joined the Rewiring Australia online network of Electric Communities, and are working on incorporating many of their great resources into the information on our website and for future events.
    • We’re seeking funding and other support for our activities such as workshops and events. (As all of us are volunteers, any funding goes directly towards paying for the community activities we set up – and a little can go a long way!)

Are you great with social media, and keen to help with the Renewable Bermagui vision?

Renewable Bermagui is looking for one more volunteer to join us, to help grow our social media, online presence, and community outreach.

If you're comfortable using Instagram, Facebook, email newsletters, and possibly even website management (or eager to learn any of these!), and you share our mission of improving education and access to renewable and sustainable technologies in our community, we’d love to hear from you!

This volunteer role would take about 8-10 hours per month on average, but could vary depending on workshops and events we've got planned. But - we are all volunteers and of course flexible to adapt to changing schedules and other priorities. If you're interested, please reach out for a chat at [email protected].

    Get in Touch

We’re keen to more actively use our social media as a platform to tell your stories about the need for better local energy reliability and to share ideas about how we can improve our community’s resilience. We’d love to hear from you if you have a story you’d like us to help share.
