Message from the President

As we head into May, we’re excited to share key updates from the past month at Aquanty, and a review of notable events to come. This month we had the pleasure of attending Conservation Ontario's annual Collaborative Information Session (CACIS 2025) where Steve Frey presented on 

HydroClimateSight, Aquanty’s cloud-based system for real-time hydro-climatological prediction and analysis across Ontario, and our ongoing HydroSphereAI beta test. This spring over 20 conservation authorities signed up to test out this new machine-learning powered hydrologic forecasting system. 

May will be a particularly busy travel month for Aquanty. We'll be attending the 2025 Power of Water Canada (POWC) conference in Niagara, the joint GAC-MAC-IAH conference in Ottawa, and finally the CWRA conference in Penticton, and we're looking forward to connecting with new partners and collaborators at each event! 

We’re especially looking forward to exhibiting at the 2025 POWC Conference and Trade Show as it will be our first time attending, and we’re excited to introduce HydroSphereAI— our new machine learning-based hydrologic forecasting platform— to Ontario’s waterpower community.

At the GAC-MAC-IAH conference Aquanty staff will be chairing multiple sessions which will heavily feature the Canada1Water project, and we'll also be delivering a two-day short course on fully-integrated hydrologic modelling using HydroGeoSphere. This intensive course is a great opportunity to dive into the core capabilities of HGS— from model setup and calibration to results interpretation and troubleshooting. The course will be offered in a hybrid format, and anyone interested in participating can email Brayden McNeill ([email protected]) for registration details.

I'm also pleased to announce a few upcoming webinars where you can learn more about some of our ongoing projects/collaborations. On May 21st we'll dive into the new machine-learning forecasts with our webinar “HydroSphereAI: Machine Learning-Driven Insights and Hydrological Forecasting in a Changing Climate”. The next day (May 22nd) we'll host a special session “Working at Aquanty – Co-Op Placement Information Session,” for students interested in learning more about co-op opportunities with our team. If you are an academic in our network and are working/teaching in Canada please let your students know about this event! And then in June join us for “Tools and Strategies for Agricultural Water Management” with Dr. David Lapen, where we’ll explore innovative approaches and technologies to support agricultural water sustainability.

Lastly, while we pride ourselves on developing world-class tools like HydroGeoSphere, we also recognize that is what truly sets us apart are the people behind the platform as demonstrated by the testimonials we occasionally receive from users. This month we wanted to highlight some kind words from Matteo Roncoroni, whose team is using HGS to model hyporheic exchange in salmon habitats— check out the full testimonial below, and the full story in a recent research highlight.

Monetizing the role of water in sustaining watershed ecosystem services using a fully integrated subsurface–surface water mode

This research, co-authored by David R. Lapen, Susan Preston, Tariq Aziz, and Steven K. Frey, highlights the role of subsurface water in sustaining ecosystem services during droughts. Using HydroGeoSphere (HGS), the team analyzed the South Nation Watershed (SNW) in eastern Ontario, emphasizing how subsurface water supports evapotranspiration in agricultural landscapes.

Numerical analysis of thermal response tests with groundwater flow and heat transfer model

This research highlight, co-authored by Aquanty’s senior scientist Hyoun-Tae Hwang, explores the interplay between soil heterogeneity, preferential flow, and isotopic tracing to better understand water flow and transport dynamics in hillslope systems. Using HydroGeoSphere (HGS), the team simulated coupled surface and subsurface water flow and isotope transport in an artificial hillslope environment.

Canada1Water at GAC-MAC-IAH-CNC 2025
We’re pleased to share that Canada1Water collaborators and members of the Aquanty team will be attending the GAC-MAC-IAH-CNC 2025 Conference this spring, with contributions to three important sessions that advance national conversations on groundwater science and large-scale hydrologic modelling.

Special Session 7: Surface water-groundwater interactions through recharge, discharge, and contribution to ecosystems
This session explores methodological developments and the characterization of processes linked to groundwater recharge, groundwater flow and groundwater discharge, as well as interactions with ecosystems. Attend to learn about advancements in monitoring, field-based investigations, data-driven analysis, and simulation methods that enhance our ability to track these processes and predict groundwater availability, surface water-groundwater interactions, and ecosystem responses under changing conditions


Special Session 14: Public groundwater science and policy in Canada

This session will explore the evolving landscape of groundwater science, governance, and policy in Canada. With groundwater supplying roughly 30% of Canadians, this is a timely opportunity to reflect on past successes and challenges— and chart a path forward in advancing national groundwater knowledge and data sharing.

Special Session 16: Harnessing large scale hydrologic models to assess future water security

This session highlights the critical role of large-scale, integrated hydrologic models in assessing climate change impacts on Canada’s water systems. Find our monthly HGS software update on our 'HGS Downloads' page, the April 2025 software update is now available. The latest update is packed with performance optimizations and tools to streamline your modelling workflow, with improvements to model setup, runtime performance, and memory management.

1. New commands to select segments from polylines shapefiles— great for defining channels, tile drains, and other domain features

2. A new "specified uniform mass flux" boundary condition for streamlined multi-solute transport setup

3. New command "lst off" to disable .lst file generation— saving memory for large, long-duration models

4. Plus 12+ performance optimizations and bug fixes to enhance speed and usability.
