Black History in Indiana

As we continue to celebrate Black History Month, I am asking that you consider visiting some of the historic sites in Indiana that highlight the great diversity of our state:

Indiana State Museum, Indianapolis (Marion County)
Image description

I serve on the Board of Directors of the Indiana State Museum and Historical Sites. Several years ago, we raised the funds to open the Levi and Catharine Coffin Interpretive Center. The Center honors the courageous efforts of Levi and Catharine Coffin, key figures in the Underground Railroad. The Center features exhibits detailing their work in assisting fugitive slaves, interactive displays, and artifacts that bring the history of this period to life. Central to the Center is the meticulously preserved Coffin House, known as the "Grand Central Station" of the Underground Railroad. Visitors can explore this historic home and gain a deeper understanding of the Coffins' dedication to the abolitionist cause, making the Center a powerful testament to their enduring legacy and the fight for freedom.

I wanted to inform you of these small contributions that have been made to preserve the history of Blacks in Indiana. Our state's diversity cannot be denied...it is part of our proud history. Please feel free to contact me at [email protected].
