Dear friends of NAOMI Thessaloniki

We are living in difficult times. It is becoming increasingly risky for persecuted people and people from crisis regions to flee. In future, their rights to asylum and human rights will be deliberately restricted in Europe as part of the Common European Asylum System (CEAS). EU funds are mainly used for defence and deterrence (e.g. in high-tech security camps) while there is a lack of integration measures such as language courses, job placement and housing.

“Who takes responsibility for the disastrous social consequences of this policy? We are talking about the dangers of ghettoisation, drug use and radicalisation. All the conditions here on the ground (in Greece) promote these problems and thus successively prevent peaceful coexistence and good integration in the future. How are people who are humiliated like this as soon as they enter Europe supposed to build trust in us, the Europeans?”
(Doro Blancke https://doroblancke.at/bericht-aus-lesbos-und-athen/)

At NAOMI, we stand up for a dignified life for all. And in our work, we experience how women and men fight with the greatest effort to stay safe and free. It is these women and men who give us the drive and strength for our daily work. Human rights are our compass.

While aid organisations in Thessaloniki are closing down and others are having to reduce their work, we want to continue and improve our work. NAOMI's goal is and remains the integration of refugees in Greece. In doing so, we also want to protect our beneficiaries from a dangerous onward journey to the north and prevent secondary migration.

We are able to do this because we are part of a large, stable solidarity network of churches, communities, organisations and private donors. This includes you, the recipients of this newsletter in the pre-Christmas season 2024.

I greet you all warmly and gratefully. Please continue to stand with NAOMI as we work together for the humane reception of refugees and for peaceful coexistence in our societies.

With this in mind, I sincerely wish you a blessed and enlightening time of peace and joy for all people.

Dorothee Vakalis

Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of NAOMI

Our team under the direction of Sofia Kazantsidou has done a wonderful job, very demanding and perfect work. This collection is now on the market in Germany. (www.projecteleven.de)

  • We surprise our customers with the NAOMI Africa collection made of fabrics from the Congo or with prints of motifs by the Congolese artist Richard Lusakumunu (Instagram: @lusaks_01). Artists present the beauty and richness of their African culture in this collection.

Hooray, NAOMI will be at the Christmas Market in Cologne from 9th to 15th December with 700 products from our workshop at Häuschen 31. It is sponsored by the Initiativgruppe für Griechische Kultur in der Bundesrepublik e. V. A big thank you goes to the chairwoman Anastasia Sakavara and her team, who will all be working at the stall every day for a week! Thanks to the City of Cologne, twin city of Thessaloniki.

The NAOMI donation table in the Ludwigsburg area offers NAOMI products in the Württemberg area in church congregations and at events lovingly and, above all, very successful.
Conversations about flight and migration and ‘How can we get involved?’ take place ‘across the table’. A wonderful programme with a dedicated team, which Ingrid Häcker-Albrecht will be happy to provide information about: [email protected]. You can also request a ‘Travelogue Thessaloniki’, which provides an insight into the work of NAOMI and other projects that are committed to helping refugees.
The next dates are:

NAOMI donation table at the Ludwigsburg Christmas market on 12 and 13 December

SOCIAL DEPARTMENT

So far in 2024, 40 people (29 women and 11 men) have received direct counselling and support from social worker Alex Triantafillidis (indirectly, a further 119 family members). 17 cases were carried over from the previous year and 23 cases were added during the year. 20 people received financial support, mostly people who have to get by in Greece without any state aid after their asylum was recognised or rejected. Some live with friends, others in women's shelters and others (19 people) were given temporary accommodation in a hostel.

All of them are long-term clients with multiple needs. This social work is mainly financed with project funds from the Diakonische Werke in Baden and Württemberg and many private donors. This gives NAOMI the privilege of being able to provide unbureaucratic and targeted support in emergencies or over a longer period of time.

SOCIAL WOMAN'S WORKSHOP

This workshop is led by Gabriella Sampsonidou. Women create small, artistic cushions filled with organic lavender from a Greek lavender producer. This enables them to generate a small income for their livelihood. Kadhja, who is staying with the Mother Theresa Sisters, says:

"I am very happy to come every day in NAOMI. I find here a safe space and people who care about me. It makes me stronger to continue. NAOMI gives me the opportunity to learn, to be creative, to socialize and with my participation in Women's Social Workshop to feel useful and empowered that I am capable to earn some money for my survive."

CASA BASE

Safe Space for Girls and Women in Diavata

We are looking for new volunteers for various positions in CASA BASE (distribution of relief supplies and food, workshops and courses, health care and administration). If you would like to contribute expertise from home (crowdfunding, translations, text editing, systemic coaching) and help shape and sustainably develop the work of CASA BASE, please contact us directly ([email protected]). We ask for a CV and a letter of motivation.

So far this year, 39 volunteers and interns from various countries (Germany, France, Netherlands, USA, Switzerland, Denmark, Spain, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Greece) have been involved. Most of them came via reports from previous volunteers. The Centre for Mission and Ecumenism from Hamburg sent a scholarship holder for 6 months and Aktion Sühnezeichen sent a woman for a year. Avicenna also placed interested people. See the report: https://avicenna-hilfswerk.de/aerztlicher-einsatz-im-casa-base-in-diavata.

The volunteer team with kittens in summer

When you enter the huge 500m² warehouse today, you are impressed by the well-stocked clothes boutique with donations from organisations and private individuals. Here, families can take their time to select the right items for them. The nearby camp is currently home to 700 people, many of whom have arrived with nothing and are in urgent need of basic necessities. The basic facilities in the camp are completely inadequate. Volunteers are also needed to help with the time-consuming sorting process and to give friendly advice.

Donations of clothes, shoes, household items, fabrics, toiletries etc. from Germany can be sent to NAOMI through our partner organisation Hamburger Hilfskonvoi. Christian Großeholz and Franziska Schubert will be happy to inform you about NAOMI's further needs (https://www.hamburgerhilfskonvois.de/).

One of Many Success Stories: Hardi from Ghana

This is Hardi, I came to Moria camp in Lesvos Island, when I was a teenager in 2018. I felt scared and uncertain about my future because of the situation in the camp, few months later I got transferred to a shelter for minors of NGO Arsis in Thessaloniki. I enrolled in high school and went to sewing lessons at Naomi Ecumenical Workshop.

Now looking back, I can’t be nothing but proud of the hard work. I completed Greek high school, completed Professional training at Naomi, got employed by NAOMI for the textile production and was educated in design and patron. I worked as a supervisor for a team of 20 people in one of the biggest resorts in the island of Santorini. I thrive in an environment where I feel safer. I am hoping to follow my studies and making the best of the new opportunities ahead. I believe that what I can achieve is limitless.”

A New Face at NAOMI

Lena Hambalaeva took over the accounting department in August. She replaces Eva Maria Kiorpelidou, who has been with NAOMI since the beginning. Eva has digitised the financial administration over the years and has also provided great administrative support to the Board. We owe her a lot and wish her all the best.

Lena is now in the office every day from 9.00 to 17.00 and manages the cash register and all income, expenditure and payments. This year alone, there have been several thousand transactions at 250 cost centres. Then there are the financial reports for twelve projects, some of which are very extensive and demanding.

Image description

We are grateful that NAOMI has found in Lena a proven successor with 16 years of experience in financial offices and as a committed volunteer in refugee work, and we wish Lena all the best and joy in her work and in our team.
