Happy 95th Birthday, Governor O'Bannon!

While you are no longer with us, your legacy lives on.

We ask that you please review this short list of the accomplishments of former Governor Frank O'Bannon (1997-2003).

  • Last Democrat elected as Governor of Indiana.
  • More than 25,000 students and visitors watched as he became the first governor of the 21st century, making it the largest gubernatorial inauguration crowd in Indiana history.
  • He created Building Bright Beginnings to emphasize the importance of emotional and brain development of children from birth to 4 years of age.
  • Under his leadership, Hoosier Healthwise provided health care to nearly 500,000 children who did not have insurance, making Indiana a national leader.
  • He formed the bipartisan Education Roundtable, which tackled the most intractable problems facing public schools, making Indiana one of the first states to meet new federal education standards.
  • Before anyone ever talked about the issue, he restructured the state’s tax system, making it more conducive to job creation, and extended $1 billion in property tax relief to homeowners.
  • He persuaded the legislature to pass Energize Indiana, a comprehensive economic development package that took advantage of Indiana’s economic promise in four high-tech sectors: the life sciences, advanced manufacturing, information technology and distribution.
  • Unlike any other governor in the nation, took steps to mitigate a serious budget deficit and addressed long-term ways to improve the economy.
  • He created Ivy Tech, the state’s first Community College system, providing a higher education alternative for Hoosiers for whom a four-year college was not a good fit.
  • He moved people with developmental disabilities from state institutions to less-restrictive community settings.
  • Frank O'Bannon created the state’s first public access counselor to help citizens get government information.
  • Finally, Frank O’Bannon was the first Indiana governor to have a computer on his desk and used the Internet and e-mail long before that became routine.

When people doubt that Democrats can win and lead Indiana, never forget Governor Frank O'Bannon.

WHAT YOU MISSED IN THE VIP WEEKEND EDITION

Braun puts others in their place, just by othering them

In 2025, new Governor Mike Braun, in his first budget proposal in office, proposes to end funding for the Native American Indian Affairs Commission. The cut comes as part of his 15% cut to the Indiana Civil Rights Commission. That may sound like a lot of money, but it isn’t. The state is spending less than $3 million a year on the ICRC in the current budget.

Transparency and Secretary of State Morales: Report

Indiana Secretary of State Diego Morales faced scrutiny in a House Ways and Means Committee hearing over hiring his brother-in-law for a six-figure salary, awarding over $300,000 in staff bonuses, and issuing no-bid contracts to campaign donors.

Braun needs to serve as governor, not senator

When the President Donald Trump administration announced a federal freeze in grant and loan spending, Indiana’s Gov. Mike Braun cheered the president’s action. This would have been understandable from Sen. Mike Braun, our current governor’s previous role, but not necessarily as governor.

Going to court is never fun, but here’s why we sued the state

The Great State of Illiana (or is it Indinois?)

It is hard to resist trolling Illinois, especially Chicago. I’ve done so myself on occasion. After all, Chicago is a city with too many governance flaws to list in a single column. But they also enjoy a few strengths. The Chicago Metro area is bigger, richer, better educated and its workers substantially more productive than Indiana as a whole.

Governor’s cabinet secretaries near top of state pay with $275K salaries

The eight cabinet secretaries serving under Gov. Mike Braun will be some of the highest-paid employees in the state — with each taking home $275,000 for their new positions. Five of the secretaries will also directly lead an agency, though all oversee several agencies under the newly crafted cabinet structure.

And In Trumpy Indiana

If you wondered whether Indiana’s new Governor, Mike Braun, would follow the agenda of his running mates–Beckwith, Banks and RoQuita, all of whom are “out and proud” White Christian Nationalists–there’s no longer any doubt. Braun is slavishly following Trump’s assault on anyone who isn’t a straight White Christian Male.

John Rust or Erin Houchin for Congress?
