Welcome from the Executive Office

For over 17 years, CEE has been dedicated to advancing evidence-informed approaches to environmental management by facilitating the conduct and dissemination of high-quality syntheses that inform decision-making and support the conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem services for global benefit. If you are receiving this newsletter, we thank you for being part of our community.

Whether you are a researcher, policy maker, practitioner, knowledge broker, or a concerned citizen, this quarterly newsletter is designed to keep you connected and informed of CEE's activities. As we launch the newsletter, we'd like to learn more about your interests and how CEE can support your needs – please take a moment to fill out this brief survey.

Strategic Directions

Earlier this year, we released a new 10-year strategic plan centered on three pivotal themes that drive our mission to catalyse evidence-informed decision-making in environmental management:

Expanding evidence synthesis and evidence-informed decision-making in environmental management
Providing evidence services to the academic and user communities that enable more efficient production and use of reliable evidence to inform decision-making
Strengthening CEE organisational resilience and capacity

As we move forward with our strategic plan, we invite you to engage with us through our journal, the work of our Centres, our training programs, or by volunteering to support CEE’s services and activities.

Centre Highlight

CEE’s global network of Centres work within their region to develop expertise in evidence synthesis methodology, promote and encourage commissioning of systematic reviews and other review types, and work with practitioners and policy makers to support the use of rigorous evidence in environmental policy and practice. In this issue, we welcome the Pan-African Collective for Evidence (PACE) as our newest CEE Centre. PACE works to build institutionalized evidence-to-policy systems that have real-world impact on people and their communities.

From the Journal

We are pleased to welcome Steven Cooke and Biljana Macura as editors-in-chief for CEE’s official journal, Environmental Evidence.

Steven Cooke is the founding Director of the Canadian Centre for Evidence-Informed Conservation and a Canada Research Professor in Environmental and Interdisciplinary Science. His diverse research interests span the natural and social sciences with a focus on generating and synthesizing evidence to support environmental practice and policy.

Biljana Macura is a Senior Research Fellow at Stockholm Environment Institute in Stockholm. Biljana produces rigorous syntheses of scientific evidence, including systematic reviews and maps, to inform decision-making in environment and development. She also works on the improvement and development of methodology for evidence synthesis and provides training in this field.

Call for Papers!

Environmental Evidence is calling for submissions to our collection on the current and future use of artificial intelligence for systematic evidence synthesis in environmental management. The collection aims to examine AI applications across various stages of the review process, offering a comprehensive analysis of both the benefits and limitations of AI in evidence synthesis. Submissions are open through 31 May 2025. Learn more and submit to the collection here.

Community Spotlight

The Evidence Synthesis Infrastructure Collaborative (ESIC) is a new initiative, supported by Wellcome (a global independent charitable foundation), focused on developing global frameworks for a more coordinated and collaborative approach to delivering evidence synthesis. CEE joins partners from across the evidence community to support ESIC’s planning process, which will bring together the demand, supply, and intermediary communities to identify innovative solutions that can advance evidence use across sectors. ESIC recently sought public feedback on reports produced by its six working groups, and the next open consultation period will be 30th April - 7th May.
