Stephanie chats with Dr. Heidi Beirich, the co-founder and chief strategy officer for Global Project Against Hate and Extremism. The authoritarian movements across the world share underlying discriminatory ideologies, and too often have been exported from the U.S. The consequence of the growth in these movements is violence and the dangerous integration of bigoted and racist ideas into societal discourse, government policies, and political platforms. Increasingly, as far-right extremist movements have gained in strength, established taboos around far-right extremism have collapsed as mainstream political parties cooperate with extremists once considered out of bounds.

Image description

Every week in the Freedom Over Fascism newsletter, Stephanie will point out the stories relevant to the 2024 election in Indiana and nationally, with a focus on the stakes of the election, rather than any discussion of the odds. She'll also provide actionable guidance on tested messaging to use in our campaigns, activism, and daily conversations.

WHAT YOU MISSED IN THE VIP WEEKEND EDITION

I was totally wrong about Todd Rokita (but not much else) in 2024

I was right that Micah Beckwith would rain down the fires of political hell on Mike Braun. I was right that Democrats needed to nominate Destiny Wells for attorney general and Terry Goodin for lieutenant governor (neither decision turned out to matter much, though).

Democrats have a year to start rebuilding a base

Coming off a string of election losses in recent years, members of the state and local Democratic Party have a year to right the ship. Recently, Mike Schmuhl announced that he would not seek another term as chairman of the state party.

3 laws change in Indiana on January 1. How they'll affect child labor

Indiana has eased restrictions on children working. Most notably, all restrictions on the number of hours or the times a 16- or 17-year-old may work have been removed. Beginning at age 16, teens can work any shift an adult can work, with or without adult supervision.

Indiana needs more residency programs in rural areas to address shortage

Indiana’s health workforce shortage is especially hard on the rural areas of the state. The scarcity of physician training opportunities in these areas may be contributing to the absence of rural doctors.

Two Indiana towns make the ‘safest small towns’ list

When all the calculations were done, they found the safest small city in the country is Columbus, Indiana. The city south of Indianapolis had the lowest property crime rate of all the smaller towns and cities and among the lowest violent crime rates.

Medicaid, prior authorization to be major topics in 2025 session

A revenue report from mid-December determined that incoming monies would be sluggish over the next two years, with barely any new dollars expected to hit Indiana’s coffers. Much of that funding will be swallowed up by Medicaid costs, which are growing at a faster rate than the state’s revenues.

IN Focus: Panelists discuss 2024’s winners & losers

In the video above, IN Focus panelists Laura Wilson, Robin Winston, Tony Samuel, Terri Austin and Mike Murphy discuss this year’s top stories, including the race for President and the elections here in Indiana that saw Sen. Mike Braun (R-IN) elected as our state’s next governor and Rep. Jim Banks (R-IN) elected to replace Braun in the U.S. Senate.

Lee Hamilton: Americans take a pass on improving elections

One of the things I’ve always appreciated about American elections is that the results are always fascinating – a glimpse into our communal likes, dislikes, and moods.

Derek Camp will not seek second term as Allen County Democratic Chair

I want to let you know that I will not be seeking a second term this March. Thank you for the support each of you have given me in this role the past four years. We still have much work to do. Though my time as the Allen County Democratic Party Chair is coming to an end, I will still be in the fight with you.

"It starts just before the holidays, and then it explodes during the holidays, and then you tend to have peak of disease around January and February," said Dr. John Christensen, a doctor of pediatric infectious diseases.

Let’s Call It What It Is

I have a number of kind, well-meaning, “Never Trump” friends who tell me I’m painting with too broad a brush when I characterize the MAGA movement as racist to its core. These nice people (granted, lots nicer than me) are loathe to attribute Trumpism simply to hatred of those “Others”–Blacks, Jews, Muslims, immigrants (ok, Brown immigrants–not those from Norway or Canada), LGBTQ+ folks, and those detested “libruls.”

Police warn against shooting guns into the air on New Year's Eve

The Hammond Police Department is strongly urging residents to refrain from firing guns into the air on New Year's Eve, or during any celebration, since bullets shot into the sky still are potentially lethal when they come down.
