News for Action
A bi-monthly newsletter to spread the seeds and connect the dots.

Let's close the year together!

We are delighted to invite you to our final webinar of the year on The Relevance of ACEs to Private Boarding Schools in the UK with our very special guests, Simon Partridge and Morag Edwards, who will share their lived experiences and insights.

Check out the programme and registrations, and join us for a stimulating evening on 28th November!

Racism is a public health crisis in London: the time to act is now!

In September 2020, the London ACEs Hub met and issued a Call to Action, citing racism as a public health crisis. As we show below, a new report by the Institute of Health Equity lends urgency to calls for action in London.

It argues that racism affects health in three interrelated ways. Firstly, experiencing racism directly harms physical and mental health. Secondly, racism may cause socioeconomic disadvantage and exposure to the adverse social determinants of poor health. Thirdly, racism damages health through the operation of a biased health care system and other services. The structural nature of racism connects these effects.

Yet another reminder comes from a report below showing how the stony path from asylum accommodation to homelessness affects Black communities in London. Changes are needed to help everyone feel part of connected communities, and not isolated individuals adrift on the tide of failed policies and empty words. London cannot wait any longer: the time for action is the present, when the recommendations should be aired with all communities so they can influence strategies, plans and resources to be mobilised.

October foreshadows the closing weeks of the year, when we hope you can enjoy the peace of darker evenings and nurture your own warm connections.

In our final webinar of 2024, we will explore the untold stories of children who were sent to boarding schools when they were young, often against their will, and subjected to emotionally and physically abusive environments. You will gain unique insights into how these adverse childhood experiences may have shaped the personal lives of these individuals and the broader social implications. Facilitated by Mpume Mpofu, the event will be a rare opportunity to reflect upon lived experience and explore the profound impact of trauma that persists beneath the surface with our special guests, Simon Partridge and Morag Edwards.
