Recap and Upcoming

Our second formal hunt of the season was livelier than expected, with hounds getting on line despite the warm, dry conditions. They even managed to put quarry to ground in an overflow pipe near the two ponds! Sunday's Hunter Trials were a smashing success. Thank you to Simon for providing the venue and for all the volunteers who helped make the event a success. On Wednesday, we took out a bitch pack, and they also managed to find a few lines. Fingers crossed for some rain this evening and good scenting for Saturday!

Message from the Masters

Dear Members of the Fort Leavenworth Hunt:

As we kick off the season, the Joint Masters would like to ensure that members are up to date on matters relating to the hunt and know what to expect this season.

Firstly, the season is off to a great start! We enjoyed a productive summer that included trail familiarization rides, full moon rides, and—despite struggling to schedule a formal work day—enough work by various members that our primary fixture is in quite good shape. Our fall activities included hound exercises, the Intro to Foxhunting sessions, autumn hunting, and our participation in the second annual Kansas Hunt Week. Hunt Week kicked off with a fabulous staff/welcome party and a terrific performance by our pack at our home fixture on October 6. It concluded with our Opening Hunt on October 12—featuring a horse-drawn hay wagon and fantastic whoopee wagons—which was enjoyed by our own members as well as several guests from visiting hunts. And, the fall Hunter Trials on October 20 was also a huge success!

Secondly, we would like to provide updates on/clarify the following:

Staff

  • MFH/Honorary Huntsman Dr. Steve Thomas had a shoulder surgery that will “ground” him for a period. His status as a Joint Master and Honorary Huntsman is unchanged and he will continue to execute all the associated responsibilities of these positions—minus the mounted hunting of the hounds, which will be carried out by MFH Teresa Griffith, our named “backup” Honorary Huntsman, during his recovery. He expects to be back in the saddle at the beginning of February.
  • With Teresa stepping up as Huntsman, our already quite minimal staff will be further reduced. In order to be able to continue taking hounds out safely, we will need more of our members to step in and help. Please keep in mind that FLH is a volunteer-run hunt—leadership and staff pay the same dues as all members, but commit to a certain level of time and effort to ensure ongoing sport. While we are happy to do so, we can’t do it alone! Please think about how you might be able to help ensure that we can hunt regularly, whether by driving hounds, hauling an extra horse so that someone else might drive hounds, learning to whip in (mounted or as a road whip), helping existing staff tack up/untack so they can focus on hounds, etc. Teamwork makes the dream work! Please contact MFH Steve Thomas (913.636.3778) or MFH Teresa Griffith (913.486.4707) for more information/to volunteer.

Fixtures and Hunt Schedule

  • We will maintain our Wednesday (informal) and Saturday (formal) hunt schedule as permitted depending on staff availability and with the typical adjustments as required by weather, deer hunting season, or other operational considerations. As always, the safety of the hounds and of our members and their mounts is top priority.
  • We plan to hunt exclusively at our McGuire’s fixture until the beginning of the year due to staff limitations and lack of trail clearing at other fixtures. We will coordinate opportunities to hunt with the Flint Hills Hunt during the fall/winter and will hopefully return to our Division, Staver’s, Buchanan, and Maryville fixtures in the spring.

Please continue to watch Facebook and our weekly emails for additional/new information as it becomes available. In the meantime, feel free to contact any of us individually or as a group (at [email protected]) with any questions/concerns. Thank you to everyone who has already contributed so much—including our LFA counterparts—to make this season a success. We hope you are as excited about the rest of the season as we are!

Sincerely,

Jim, Teresa, Candy, Steve

Hunt Breakfasts

With your support, the FLH tradition of providing a delicious breakfast after every Saturday Hunt will continue. To make it happen, we need two to three members/families to team up and provide food for approximately 30-40 people on a rotating basis. As the cook(s), you get to decide what is for breakfast—even if it's actually lunch or dinner food. 😊 The breakfast volunteers are responsible for set-up and clean up on their day. (Feel free to pull your vehicle/rig near the clubhouse before and after the hunt to unload or load items, but please do not park in the staff parking spots.) Paper goods (plates, utensils, napkins) are supplied by LFA. To sign up, please contact Angela Fain (913-775-1240).

Receive Recognition for FLH Volunteerism

As FLH is part of the Fort Leavenworth Family, Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (FMWR) program, members of the Fort Leavenworth Hunt can record and receive recognition from Fort Leavenworth for volunteer hours spent supporting the hunt. Recording volunteer hours is an individual choice and not a requirement, but is strongly supported by the FLH Masters. Recording hours both allows for individual recognition by Fort Leavenworth FMWR and for Fort Leavenworth leadership to understand the significant time contributed by our members to make FLH successful as an organization. The guide to the right will take you through the process of registering, applying for positions, and recording your hours. Please contact FLH Master Candy Smith with any questions.

Kennel Needs

The kennel wishlist has been updated!

Performance Trials at MVH

FLH will be participating in the fall performance trial hosted by the Mission Valley Hunt this November. Performance trials involve several hunts each bringing five hounds to be hunted together as a pack under a guest huntsman. This allows judges to evaluate the performance of the hounds in the same conditions on the same day and to award the top performers.

FLH members are welcome and encouraged to attend. The event takes place November 21 to 23, beginning with a welcome party Thursday evening followed by hunting on Friday and Saturday. The fee to participate is $300 for the full weekend (includes welcome party, breakfasts, an awards dinner, and hunting) or $150 for a single day. (For juniors, $150 for the weekend and $90 for one day.) Please note our reciprocal agreement with MVH does not apply to this event. Learn more and download registration and hold harmless forms here.

Please note FLH will not hunt on November 23rd in order to support the performance trials.

LAC Information

Image description

A Local Access Credential (LAC) allows civilians to enter Fort Leavenworth without having to stop at the visitor center each time. Members needing to obtain or renew a LAC must complete the Applicant Information and Criminal History sections of the LAC application (click image to download) and submit it to Master Candy Smith. You may also email your info to Candy or provide it over the phone (913-948-0189) and she will complete the form for you. She will then submit it to the FMWR Director, who will sign it and forward it to the Visitor Center (VCC) for processing. Current processing time is 2.5–3 weeks. Renewing LAC holders, please note this is a new form.

For those who need only temporary access to Ft. Leavenworth (for the hunt ball, for example), please register for a one-day pass online.

We use GROUPME Text Alerts for changes and cancellations due to weather or other circumstances. (Alerts for changes or cancellation of an event will continue to be posted on Facebook as well, and you can always call a Master.) To sign up for these text alerts, contact Jim Fain.
