Why does the MANIFEST Exhibition take place in Nantes?

This project, and in particular the exhibition, takes its full force in Nantes — France’s leading trading port in the 18th century with 1,800 shipments — which, for the past 30 years, has been engaged in historical and remembrance work recognized in France and internationally. Many local actors and associations are involved in this work, especially Caribbean and African communities with whom we have worked for a long time. The aim of this work of remembrance is to acknowledge history, to confront it, and to combat the societal legacies that are still very present in our European societies, such as racism and discrimination. During their presentation in Nantes, the works created will be fully engaged in the social debate. Nantes has a rich historical heritage still visible in its old buildings in the historic city center and in the Museum of the History of Nantes.

We look forward to welcoming you to the MANIFEST Exhibition in Nantes to explore the powerful and thought-provoking artworks that reflect on the history and legacies of the transatlantic trade of enslaved people. Join us for this unique opportunity to engage with history through art and new technologies!
