Road to the Final Exhibition of CUMEDIAE´S

Project MANIFEST — in numbers!

Image description

CUMEDIAE proudly shares more about Project MANIFEST and its Final Exhibition "Afterimages and Perspectives of Colonial Enslavement"!

It is the product of an inspiring cross-border cooperation. For the past two years, we have been joining our efforts — as a diverse, varied group of individuals and organisations — to carry out a multifaceted collaboration around the topic of the transatlantic trade of enslaved people. This is what the process and its components looked like, in numbers:

🎨 22 artists from 13 countries, presenting 13 works ranging from cinema to music, poetry, film, and digital art, seeking to contribute with new perspectives to the re-imagination of Europe’s collective memory of the trade;
🤝 5 European partners — Khora (Denmark), Les Anneaux de la Memoire (France), Pro Progressione (Hungary), Gerador (Portugal), and CUMEDIAE aisbl (Belgium), whose collaborative efforts have been instrumental in bringing the project to life;
🌍 3 artistic residencies hosted in Budapest/Zsennye, Lisbon, and Copenhagen;
📹 1 immersive Exhibition aiming to provide an innovative perspective on the history and legacies of the transatlantic trade of enslaved people, placing art at the heart of the evocation of collective memories.

💡 Interested in joining our conversation? See you in Nantes from September, 19th to October, 6th!

Discover the interviews

with Project Butterfly's composers!

CUMEDIAE has the pleasure to share with you the latest updates from our Butterfly Project Opera, focusing on our residency interview series.

In this series, we sat down with Marco Attura, Paavo Korpijaakko, and Beniamin Baczewsk, the compositors behind our project, to delve into their inspirationsprocesses, and impressions. They also shared their first impressions of the stories written by students and foreshadowed their musical aspirations for The Butterfly Project Opera.

“We defined the scenes, the voices of the characters, and the overall character of the music, which must adapt perfectly to the time and place,” reveals Attura about the first steps toward the opera made during the residency in Gdansk.

As summer progresses, the composition process is underway, and “we will continue until October. In the meantime, we will meet online to share and discuss our progress,” says Baczewski.

ECHO Academies: Through Black Eyes Comics Anthology Kickstarter Campaign
Image description

On July 10th, CUMEDIAE'S partner organisation within ECHO Academies Inter Alia launched a Kickstarter campaign for the "Through Black Eyes" comic book anthology. A year prior, Inter Alia invited ten talented European artists to Athens to collaborate on this first-ever comic book anthology inspired by Shadow Puppet Theatre. The comic book, which drew from contemporary life and the rich folk traditions of Karagiozis, aimed to address a wide range of social issues.

ECHO Academies is an arts initiative dedicated to nurturing young and emerging European talents in comics, fashion design, music, photography, and architecture. By drawing inspiration from cultural heritage, this project builds on previous ECHO endeavours to enhance visibility, networking, employability, and market opportunities for new artists. The project aims to cultivate resilience in young artists, provide training to improve employability, create networks between artists and the art market, and promote artists internationally.

    CUMEDIAE is glad to be part of this initiative, celebrating and supporting the emerging talents from Europe. The "Through Black Eyes" comic book anthology exemplified the kind of innovative and socially conscious projects that ECHO Academies promoted, enhancing visibility, networking, employability, and market opportunities for new artists.
