ABOUT THE WEBINAR:

Recent advancements in veterinary medicine have led to a significant increase in the availability and utilization of blood products for animals. It is crucial for veterinarians, breeders, and pet owners to understand the role of blood types in animals and the inheritance of these blood types. Blood typing is essential for improving the safety and effectiveness of transfusions in all species. For example, in cats, blood typing can also help prevent fatal neonatal isoerythrolysis. This webinar will delve into the importance of blood typing and the methods available for blood typing and crossmatching for laboratory and clinical settings.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Dr. Sushant obtained his Ph.D. from National Tsing Hua University and Academia Sinica, Taiwan. He has expertise in biomarker discovery and protein structural biology with a strong research background in investigating potential biomarkers for target diseases. Currently, Dr. Sushant works as a Diagnostic Product Specialist at Bioguard Corporation Taiwan.

KNOW MORE

Antimicrobial resistance in animals:

Antimicrobial resistance has been recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a significant global threat to public health. One of the key factors contributing to this issue is the transmission of antibiotic-resistant bacteria from animals to humans, which can result in therapeutic "dead-ends" when treating certain diseases.

From 2011 to 2021, there was a notable 47% reduction in overall antibiotic use in animals. This decline highlights the proactive measures taken by farmers and the veterinary community to minimize antibiotic use, supported by public authorities through two successive EcoAntibio plans.

    Antibiotic Class as High Priority:

As part of its expert evaluation, ANSES has created a pioneering a list identifying specific bacterium/antibiotic class combinations that necessitate priority monitoring in animals due to their significant impact on human health. This list is formulated based on three critical health criteria: the transmissibility of antimicrobial resistance, the availability of alternative antibiotics, and the incidence of infections and deaths linked to these bacteria.

Among the 11 combinations included, five have been categorized as high priority:

    1. **Enterobacterales/carbapenems**

    2. **Enterobacterales/third- and fourth-generation cephalosporins**

    3. **Staphylococcus aureus/methicillin**

    4. **Enterobacterales/fluoroquinolones**

    5. **Enterobacterales/polymyxins**

If a resistant bacterium belonging to any of these high-priority classes is identified in a livestock animal or pet during treatment, the Agency advises conducting genome sequencing. This initiative aims to evaluate and quantify the extent to which these animal reservoirs may contribute to the transmission of resistant bacteria to humans.

      💡 FUN FACT

      Did you know?

Antibiotics only work against bacterial infections, not viruses.

A common misconception is that antibiotics can treat viral infections.
