ABOUT THE WEBINAR:

Recent advancements in veterinary medicine have led to a significant increase in the availability and utilization of blood products for animals. It is crucial for veterinarians, breeders, and pet owners to understand the role of blood types in animals and the inheritance of these blood types. Blood typing is essential for improving the safety and effectiveness of transfusions in all species. For example, in cats, blood typing can also help prevent fatal neonatal isoerythrolysis. This webinar will delve into the importance of blood typing and the methods available for blood typing and crossmatching for laboratory and clinical settings.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Dr. Sushant obtained his Ph.D. from National Tsing Hua University and Academia Sinica, Taiwan. He has expertise in biomarker discovery and protein structural biology with a strong research background in investigating potential biomarkers for target diseases. Currently, Dr. Sushant works as a Diagnostic Product Specialist at Bioguard Corporation Taiwan.

Tumor Markers Used in Pathology

  • Mitotic Index: Mitotic index predicts treatment outcome and prognosis in tumors. High mitotic index confirms a high-grade tumor and can predict patient response to chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Examples of biomarkers measuring cell proliferation are AgNOR, PCNA, and Ki-67.
    • c-kit: c-kit plays a role in cell survival, proliferation, and differentiation. Mutated c-kit is found in some tumors and can be analyzed on tissue samples to predict drug activity.
    • p-53: p-53 is a tumor suppressor gene involved in DNA repair. Mutated p-53 increases the risk for tumor development and can be analyzed using immunohistochemistry.

    Serum Tumor Biomarkers

    • Hypercalcemia: Hypercalcemia is a known marker for neoplasia in dogs and cats, often caused by parathyroid hormone-related peptides. It can be seen in lymphoma in dogs and cats, apocrine gland anal sac adenocarcinoma in dogs, and thymoma and squamous cell carcinoma in cats.
    • Alkaline Phosphatase: Elevated alkaline phosphatase (ALP) is a negative prognostic factor in osteosarcoma in dogs, affecting total ALP and bone-specific isoenzyme of ALP.
    • Acute Phase Proteins: C-reactive protein (CRP) and haptoglobin are acute phase proteins that can be altered in neoplastic conditions. CRP can be used as a prognostic marker in specific cancer diagnoses.
    • Thymidine Kinase 1: Thymidine kinase 1 (TK1) reflects cell proliferation and is used in clinical oncology for early diagnosis, prognosis, therapy response, and relapse detection in malignancies.
    • Canine Lymphoma Blood Test: The cLBT is a proteomic-based assay that can detect lymphoma recurrence up to 2 months before clinical signs appear.
