York Rise Street Party

Poster for the York Rise Street Party

The York Rise Street Party is this Sunday 8th September 12noon – 5pm.

The annual Dartmouth Park area end of the summer knees up - with added ‘Green Street' eco-action interest and fun – will be opened this year by local resident and now Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, Ed Milliband, who will be opening the fair and cruising the stalls at 12noon.

It's always a good day out so do come along - and drop by to say hello at the Transition Kentish Town stall. Find us in the 'Green Street' zone, alongside Power Up North London (PUNL) who have recently successfully raised funds to install solar panels on the roofs of Regent High and Parliament Hill secondary schools; KTRetrofit, who are preparing to launch a new Sharing Space at Kentish Town Library to help us cut energy costs and carbon emissions in our homes; and Kentish Town Veg Box, our member-managed co-op that brings healthy organic seasonal UK veg and fruit to Kentish Towners, and pays small farmers a much fairer rate than supermarkets and large supply chains do.

These are all projects that started life as bright ideas in Transition Kentish Town before going on to become successful greener-living organisations in their own right. And we’ve also run a TOMORROW film café season on local eco-living success stories from around the world; harnessed parent power and citizen science to challenge air pollution around local school gates; and are a founding member of Camden Think & Do. See transitionkentishtown.org.uk for more information.

And now TKT has been awarded funding by the UK Transition Towns Network, to help us explore what ‘next gen’ low impact living initiatives local people want around Kentish Town, and to help them get involved in making them happen. So do drop by for a chat to share YOUR bright ideas, and to sign up for an invitation to a meeting happening soon to explore them. And we're welcoming kids to drop in at our street party eco-art table to draw the ‘Green Street’ or local ‘eco-park’ of their dreams.

Retrofit Kentish Town

1. New Bulbs for Old

Next week you can exchange an inefficient halogen or incandescent bulb for a new LED bulb outside the Coop in Kentish Town Road. Each LED saves £3-£5 a year (depending on use) and lasts up to 10 years so is worth quite a bit over time. To exchange come next Wednesday (11th) or Friday (13th) from 12.00-1.00pm.

2. Save Energy: Keep Warm

The organisers, retrofitkentishtown.org, are also offering a series of workshops this autumn. Save Energy: Keep Warm is a two-part series of workshops exploring our experience of cutting our energy use whilst staying warm. Held at the Kentish Town Library the first six-week series of workshops will be held on a drop-in basis from 1.30-3.30pm on Wednesdays starting on September 18th. The second series will also be on Wednesdays but at 5.30pm from November 6th.

Whilst most time will be given to discussion and activities there will be 40 minutes each session on topics ranging from Understanding Bills, Draft Exclusion, No-Cost Savers in the first series through to Insulation and Ventilation, Low-cost Savers and Renewable Energies in the second series.

These workshops are free to attend. There will be some give-aways of LED’s and other items in exchange for older bulbs and also to people who contribute to a group project (a booklet on the topic which will be available from Libraries).

This is a Retrofit Kentish Town project which is part of Think and Do’s Sharing Spaces programme funded by Ashden. Updates can be found on
retrofitkentishtown.org/library-sharing-space
This activity is facilitated by Camden’s Library Service which is working with Think and Do on further programmes.

3. Insulation and Ventilation

The next in Retrofit Kentish Town’s series of expert talks will be on insulating and ventilating homes. 5.30-6.30pm at Kentish Town Library in the week beginning Oct 14th. See www.retrofitkentishtown.org/news for a confirmed date. The following talk will be on heat pumps and solar panels.

Autumn Equinox Nature Connections walk around Parliament Hill Fields

FRIDAY 20th SEPTEMBER 5.0 - 6.30pm.

Image description

Make the date! This end of summer walk is themed on spotting and understanding seasonal changes as late summer moves into Autumn. Expect our usual mix of Nature and ecological information and seasonal Nature immersion activities. This time about migrating birds, seed distribution, finding and making shelter for the cold dark months ahead and trees moving towards the great casting off of leaves, as we ask how we can support local Nature at this time.

There will be poetry and activities to help us explore what we can learn from Nature in this season - about managing endings and beginnings and harvesting what's important in our own lives and communities. And exploring ways to support each other as we too let go of what's no longer needed, and preventing the changes needed for ourselves and the Earth to thrive.

Meet at 4.50pm at the entrance to Parliament Hill Fields beside Bistro Laz, at the Highgate Road/Swains Lane junction, for 5pm start. Sturdy footwear and clothes for all weathers advised! Buses 214, 88 and C11 stop nearby.
