Transition Kentish Town
Midsummer Newsletter

It's Midsummer Day, Friday 21st June, and sun and warmth are finally with us. Making it a great time to get out of doors and get close to Nature – whether it's tending gardens, watering community planters, picnicking with your mates or spending mindful solo time tuning-in to the voices of Nature in some local leafy flower filled spot.

Nature needs us. And we need Nature. And below are some summer events and actions to help strengthen our Nature connections, give a practical hand to local trees, plants and wildflowers and join UK wildlife and climate action groups in speaking up for Nature.

TKT Nature Connections Hampstead Heath Midsummer Summer Ramble

Saturday 29th June 2.00 - 4.30pm

Join us for a local celebration of Nature in this summer ramble around the grass meadows, hedgerows and woody glades of Hampstead Heath and Parliament Hill Fields. Enjoy discovering the richness and diversity of our local wildlife with Hampstead Heath ecologist, and climate and Nature activist, Jeff Waage. Learn how to recognise local trees, birds and wildflowers, and some of the pollinating insects of high summer. And enjoy exploring ways, through activities like Nature journaling, 'word sketching', mindful walking and finding our own Nature Connection sitting spot(s), we can help rebuild our connections with local Nature, and enjoy the improved well-being this brings for both Nature and ourselves.

No need to book but please arrive by 1.50 for a 2.00pm start. We’ll be covering both tarmac paths and rough steep off-path ground, so please wear comfortable footwear. And be prepared for the weather – hats, sunscreen and water if hot and dry, waterproofs if wet. This is English summer!

The walk starts and ends just inside the entrance to the Heath by the Highgate Road/Swains Lane junction, NW5, where buses 88, 214 and C11 all stop. Please arrive by 1.50pm for a 2pm start.

Wild About Somers Town Urban Nature Walk

Thursday 4th July 5.0-6.30pm

Join us for some relief from Election frenzy in this Urban Nature walk around Somers Town, with Camden Think & Do Sharing Spaces, Global Generation and Transition Somers Town.

Located alongside St Pancras Station and the British Library, and hemmed in by railway lines and major roads, this is a densely urban area. But it’s also home to Global Generation’s much loved Story Garden, and to small tucked away gardens in corners of housing estates created by the local Somers Town community. Camley Street Urban Nature Reserve is only a short walk to the north and - as you walk around the area - you’ll find Nature determinedly popping up through cracks in the concrete! How can we cherish Nature in our urban spaces? Our walk will be led by Jeff Waage, an ecologist with some great ideas for creating biodiversity corridors in our urban ‘deserts’, so that Nature can thrive and our own lives can be enriched by it. All welcome.

Booking by Eventbrite. Scan the QR code on the poster to reach the

Reminder! This Saturday June 22:

The BIG ‘Restore Nature Now!’ event

Starting in Park Lane at 1pm and culminating in speeches, street theatre and Nature themed activities in Parliament Square from 2.15pm, this is a chance to join major wildlife charities and advocacy groups and raise our voices for threatened UK Nature. Visit Restore Nature Now for details about joining the event, putting Nature at the heart of the election debate and signing up to support a campaign that's important for both Nature and ourselves.

And finally – Watering help is urgently needed in TKT Community Gardens

This time of year regular watering is ESSENTIAL to keeping the plants blooming for the bees and looking lovely for ourselves. But it's also a time when some of our regular watering team members are popping off on holiday. So whether you can help long term or just for now, your help will be warmly welcomed and appreciated. And while lugging cans of water can be hard work, it doesn’t take long and is an enjoyable activity out there among the flowers. If you’d like to give a hand contact : [email protected]
