The Butterfly Project Newsletter

March 2024 🦋
🎶 Bringing Sustainable Harmony to Opera🎶 The Butterfly Project Soars!

Image description

Greetings, opera enthusiasts and environmentalists alike! Welcome to the latest edition of the Butterfly Project Newsletter, your gateway to the exciting world where art and sustainability intersect. Co-funded by the European Commission under the esteemed Creative Europe Programme, the Butterfly Project continues to spread its wings, aiming to transform the landscape of opera production while nurturing a profound commitment to environmental consciousness.

STUDENTS STORY - Anyone can change into environment ambassador

Here's the big news! The first student's story that will become part of the "Elements of the Future" opera has been selected, and the winning team has been chosen! Let us remind you that the whole piece will consist of three acts inspired and built around an element (water for Gdańsk, air for Helsinki and earth for Modena). Sustainability workshops, trips to the local opera houses, and discussions with teachers and librettists preceded the youth's creative work.

Finally, we can proudly say that an Italian team from Selmi High School, Modena, named "Piuma d'Oro" (Golden plum), created a story that stunned the Committee.

The translation was made with an essential contribution of another class (3N, linguistic branch) of the same Francesco Selmi High School.

The story originates from daily actions connected to the wrong disposal of waste and deals with universal problems of illness, sense of guilt, impassivity and activism.

Partner’s meeting recap

Last week of March all of the Partners and Persons Involved in the Project Butterfly met on an online session to discuss latest developments and next steps in our sustainability journey for the very first time. There was much to talk about! Topics such as: school projects and winning stories (already selected by the professional Committee), schedule and timing of the opera production and future performances, use of digital media in the staging of the piece, ideas on sustainability in the construction and transportation of scenes were raised.

We’re looking forward to the international online meeting of students from Poland, Italy and Finland in May, which will enable them to present their visions of the opera and meet each other.

Soon after, an artistic residency in Gdańsk will be happening and that will be a true start of an intensive creative process between the composers, musicians, librettists and artistic directors. We couldn’t be more excited about what's coming!

🎶World piano day🎶

Let’s celebrate the rich history and profound impact of the piano on music and culture worldwide.

March 28th marks a tribute to its genius and the instrument that has captivated hearts for centuries.
Piano Day takes place on the 88th day of the year because of the number of keys of the instrument celebrated.

Whether you're a pianist or simply music enthusiast, join us in celebrating this timeless instrument and the joy it brings to our lives.
