| RESPONDING TO SERIOUS MENTAL ILLNESS The Clubhouse Approach |
| |
| Many of the New Yorkers we see living on the streets, suffering from addiction, and shuttling within the shelter system, are concurrently struggling with an underlying serious mental illness (SMI). And while the right to shelter in New York City may provide a temporary backstop, the streets and shelter system are inadequately prepared to help those afflicted by SMI and often exacerbate this condition. One approach that is quietly gaining ground to address SMI in the community is known as the "clubhouse model". |
| |
| The clubhouse model offers hope to people suffering from SMI by empowering individuals to reclaim their lives through community, meaningful work, and peer support. Pioneered by Fountain House in 1948, the clubhouse model creates a vibrant and supportive environment where individuals are not patients, but collaborate in daily operations, gain valuable skills, experience a sense of accomplishment, and build self-esteem. Studies have shown the impact of this approach goes beyond improved mood and well-being. Research suggests participation in clubhouses can lead to reduced hospitalizations, increased employment rates, and a higher quality of life. |
| |
| Evidence suggests a link between clubhouse involvement and reduced drug use. This can be attributed to several factors, including the strong sense of community, meaningful engagement in work, and the inspiration drawn from witnessing successful recovery journeys of peers. |
| |
| While the clubhouse model doesn't solely target drug use reduction, it fosters an environment that empowers individuals with SMI to make healthier choices and build fulfilling lives. This holistic approach offers a valuable addition to existing treatment plans, providing hope and opportunity for those who may feel lost in their struggle with mental illness and on their way to recovery. |
