| 2022 OVERDOSE DEATH DATA RELEASED Harlem, East Harlem, and NYC Overdose Deaths Increase |
| |
| The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DoHMH) has just released the latest data on overdose deaths in New York City. The 2022 overdose death data shows a continued increase in deaths city-wide and here in Harlem and East Harlem. When releasing the data, the DoHMH remained notably silent on the effectiveness of their two core strategies for combatting this epidemic in Harlem and East Harlem - supervised injection sites and harm reduction programs. This omission is particularly noteworthy given that Harlem and East Harlem are heavily saturated and impacted by these DoHMH facilities and programs.

| |
| The DoHMH noted that for the first time, more than 3,000 New Yorkers died overdosing in one year alone. Fentanyl was the most common substance involved - it was present in 81% of all 2022 overdose deaths. By comparison, cocaine was present in 53% of overdose deaths |

Methadone clinics were created in the 1970s during the Nixon presidency and were designed to control, surveil, and punish Black and brown patients. Now is the time to shut down these apartheid, carceral facilities and allow methadone to be picked up at the pharmacy. It is time to free people who take methadone. Swallow THIS is a call to action to abolish methadone clinics.
Marchetti and Redmond are co-directors of Liquid Handcuffs: A Documentary to Free Methadone. Please join us for a screening of Swallow THIS and a panel discussion. Runtime: 27 mins. |
