MANIFEST Impact on Nantes Digital Week

What a month for MANIFEST! We are glad to present the highlights of the MANIFEST artist's impact on Nantes Digital Week. It was a remarkable experience that we want to share with all of you.

On the Occasion of the 10th Nantes Digital Week, our partner Les Anneaux de la Memorie invited MANIFEST artists Magalie Mobetie and the Collective "On a slamé sur la Lune" to visit the French city hub to plunge into the innovative art festival.

On September 20th, an enlightening Masterclass designed for students and a round-table dialogue open to the general public were held. Led by artist Magalie Mobetie and the "On A Slamé Sur La Lune" collective, who also carried out a live performance, this gathering explored the realms of mediation, creative processes rooted in historical materials (archives, archaeology, heritage, etc.), and the utilization of digital tools. The aim was to shed light on how digital artworks offer novel perspectives for mediating history and heritage, with particular emphasis on the recollection of the transatlantic trade of enslaved people.

Artist Magalie Mobetie had the chance to speak both with the mayor of Nantes, Johanna Rolland, and to the deputy about the MANIFEST project, concluding with very insightful comments about cultural heritage and legacy.

Subsequently, the artists embarked on a historical tour around Nantes exploring the traces of the Transantlantic Trade of Enslaved Peoples in the city. The tour ended with a visit to the Memorial de l’Abolition.

Watch the full reel here and stay tuned to our social media channels to discover what both the audience and the artist have to say about this magnificent experience!

EUROPEANS, TRAFFICKING, AND THE TRADE OF ENSLAVED PEOPLES

How antique is the trade of enslaved people, especially in Europe? The colonial systems themselves, organised by Europeans from the 16th century onwards, reflected progress in navigation, and the colonisation of new lands. With a focus on history and contemporary implications, its impact is evident in the composition of populations, the construction of "otherness," and Europe's global relationships.

THE SPANISH TRADE OF ENSLAVED PEOPLE

Did you know? With more than a million captives human beings shipped (8.5% of all deportations), the Spanish flag ranked fourth in the Transatlantic Trade of enslaved people far behind Portugal/Brazil and Great Britain. Spain was a pioneer in the use of external service providers and became heavily involved in the 19th century when the incumbents gradually withdrew.

CLARKSON, AN ABOLITIONIST AND A CRUSADER

Thomas Clarkson is a British abolitionist who devoted his life to the crusade against the slave trade. He was moved by reading abolitionist authors who denounced the inhumanity of the slave trade and slavery and organized the Society for the abolition of the slave trade, in London in 1787, promoting the topic for several years, until the slave trade was abolished by the British parliament in 1807.
