MANIFEST September Newsletter: Copenhagen Workshops, Nantes Digital Week and more!

Welcome back!

Are you already back on track or still soaking up the last days of your vacation? In any case, we hope you had a fantastic and recharging summer holiday! Check out the highlights of the MANIFEST Project’s XR workshops that are currently taking place in the flourishing state-of-the-art city hub, Copenhagen, hosted by project co-production partner KHORA.

Kira Lund from KHORA, the project manager for the XR artwork productions, shares her experience: "By collaborating with artists in the realm of XR, we embark on a journey to reshape Europe's collective memory of the transatlantic trade of enslaved people. Our role is not only about keeping the production timelines; it's also about fostering a dynamic synergy between technology and artistry. By nurturing creative partnerships, we seek to use the power of immersive storytelling and form a bond between past and present. And by guiding artists in the XR landscape, we try to shape new projects and co-create legacies that can give light and voice to history, built on the artists' experiences and bold ideas".

After the Hungarian artistic residency, the artists began experimenting with Virtual Reality, from concept storyboarding to hands-on immersive reality ventures. It sure has been an enriching journey that already shows brilliant results.

We are proud to announce that the MANIFEST Project will be part of the  10th edition of the Nantes Digital Week. Our partner Les Anneaux de la Mémoire has extended an invitation to the MANIFEST artist Magalie Mobetie, the MANIFEST collective "On A Slamé sur la Lune," and the Nantes-based "Étrange Miroir" collective. Their objective is to share their artistic insights and encounters with a wider audience. On Wednesday, September 20th, the MANIFEST artist Magalie Mobetie and the MANIFEST collective "On A Slamé Sur La Lune" will lead a Masterclass designed for students. The afternoon will feature a round-table dialogue open to the public. This event will shed light on how digital artworks offer novel perspectives for mediating history and heritage.

During these sessions, they will explore the role of digital arts in addressing historical and heritage matters, with a particular emphasis on the recollection of the transatlantic trade of enslaved people. Additionally,  Stefanie Thomas, the Director of Strategy and Projects of CUMEDIAE, will be there to support the dissemination of the event.

THE ABOLITIONIST MOVEMENT (18TH-19TH CENTURIES)

Emerging in the late 18th century, European abolitionist societies marked a turning point in the fight against slavery. Comprising Enlightenment thinkers and evangelical Christians, these groups sought legal change through petitions. A subsequent wave in the 1820s-1830s tackled the horrors of slavery, led primarily by British and American voices. This collective effort eventually birthed an international movement in the 1840s.

COLONIAL PRODUCTS AND NEW MODES OF CONSUMPTION

Goods like coffee, chocolate, and tobacco shaped  the 17th and 18th century Europe. These exotic commodities not only influenced consumer identity but also drove the Atlantic economy. As consumption increased, so did the demand for these products in the colonies, leading to increased production and further exploitation, including the transatlantic trade of enslaved people.

Exhibition: "Senghor and the Arts: Reimagining Universalism"

🗓️ Until 19.11.2023 | Musée du quai Branly - Jacques Chirac

"Senghor and the Arts: Reimagining Universalism" highlights the cultural contributions of Léopold Sédar Senghor, poet, a key figure in the Négritude movement and Senegal's former president (1960-1980). Alongside Aimé Césaire and others, Senghor championed a universal civilization rooted in cultural exchange and dialogue. His concept of "cultural crossbreeding" aimed to unite traditions and foster a meaningful exchange of ideas. This exhibition follows Senghor's journey, exploring his evolving ideas, critiques of Western universality, and significant contributions to the arts.
