Matthew Krishanu: Two Boys in a Tree, oil and acrylic on canvas, 270 x 200cm, 2023. Photo Peter Mallet.

On a Limb (solo exhibition)

The title of the exhibition On a Limb references an idiom that dates to 19th Century America. To be “out on a limb” suggests vulnerability, and its origins refer to a person or an animal climbing a tree and going slightly too far. This sense of intimate fragility pervades Krishanu’s new paintings. In Two Boys in a Tree, 2023, the boys’ legs criss-cross, inverting and echoing the shape of a tree branch that supports them. These paintings are pervaded by echoes and refrains with the body and landscape perpetually mirroring each other. These reverberations are thematic and formal. The land in Krishanu’s paintings becomes site and subject; the figure’s emotional state extending into the environment.

Ghosted Ground

An exhibition by Joanna Whittle at the University of Sheffield following a year-long period of research with the National Fairground and Circus Archive.

Ghosted Ground explores otherness and disconnectedness whilst uncovering themes of mourning, love, and movement across the landscape emerging from letters, postcards, and photographs in the archive. These landscapes speak of the movement of people and the traces they leave behind, where the landscape becomes haunted by absence, becoming a ghosted ground of echoes.

The paintings produced consider how fairground architecture has been used to define the fragile boundaries of these ghosted spaces and the communities which exist within and beyond their real and imagined boundaries. This exhibition is a journey through the landscapes and structures of the fairground and circus as well as a celebration of the identity of Showmen* through the contemplation of the history of lives lived within and alongside these structures.

Ghosted Ground has been supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England and by the University of Sheffield Library. The project involved multiple collaborations with fairground Showmen, circus performers, photographers, academics, and community groups. The exhibition includes oral histories, collections from the National Fairground and Circus Archive, loans from the Sheffield and District African Caribbean Community Association, photographs by Bob Chase and Julie Pinnington Wright, and work from the Society of Explorers and The Big House.

*Throughout the exhibition the word Showman is used to refer to men, women and children from the British fairground community as the preferred term used by a large section of this community to refer to themselves.

No Place Like Home

ArtHouse Jersey presents No Place Like Home, an ambitious multi-disciplinary exhibition that reaches beyond the gallery to locations around Jersey. For this exhibition twenty-three artists build a rich narrative that delves into personal stories, global issues, childhood memories, and speculative worlds as well as the bleak realities of the current housing market to look at a broader concept of home and what it might mean today.

Curated by Rosalind Davis and Laura Hudson. Home may be a sanctuary or a place of danger, it might be stable or temporary, intimate or shared, rooted for generations or a refuge in times of need. Home might be a person, place or planet, a community to which we belong or contested land no longer available to us. We may all yearn for a Home, but homes are full of histories, meanings and tensions; charged with political, social and economic realities they are subject to both external forces and internal dramas. ‘Home’ means something important and different to each one of us.

For this exhibition ArtHouse Jersey has commissioned new work by Ana Čvorović (Bosnia/UK), Sasha Bowles (UK), Justin Hibbs (UK), Will Romeril (Jersey), and Lindsay Rutter (Jersey). Alongside the commissions the curators have selected existing work by artists who resonate with the broad ranging themes of No Place Like Home including: Jananne al-Ani (Iraq/UK), Rachel Ara (Jersey), Jackie Berridge (UK), George Bolster (Ire/USA), Peter Jones (UK), Daria Koltsova (Ukraine/UK), Peter Liversidge (UK), Harriet Mena Hill (UK), Kate Murdoch (UK), Ravelle Pillay (South Africa), Saba Qizilbash (Pakistan/UAE), Martha Rostler (USA), Judith Tucker (UK), Lisa Traxler (Isle of Wight/UK), Joanna Whittle (UK), Eddie Wong (Malaysia/NZ) and Andrea V Wright (UK).

At Cross Purposes

At Cross Purposes: three-way conversations between two artists and a curator.

We live in a time when borders, identities and loyalties are being called into question. The ways in which many artists approach this situation is by undertaking creative and dialogical practice with others. Dialogue exposes artists and their practice to the unfamiliar and overlooked and generates new perspectives. This project has the potential to create new, creative and sustainable, professional and friendly, networks beyond the group’s usual milieu, now and into the future. Includes work by CBP artist Paula MacArthur.

Dr Frances Woodley curated the project and resulting book and touring exhibition. Central to her projects are conversation and publication which she approaches as complementary creative practices to that of making and curation.

Call-and-response/Antiphony/Flyting
A Drawing Box Group Show

In Scotland, an old poetic tradition of ‘flyting’ was a competitive spoken word poetry session, something like a rap battle. Poets would take it in turns to respond to each other’s work, building a performance of a series of responses. In this show, we want to consider how the ‘call-and-response’ creates its own form, incorporating the curator, artists, and audience.

The act of drawing can reflect on the developmental process particular in the arts. Leaps forward in practise are made in the contemplative spaces between making. The step back and away from your art often awards a perspective on previous work that enables a transformative step in another direction. Much like flyting, this inaction, creates a call and response.

In turn and on arrival of artwork, the conversational element will extend between artists. As curators Anoushka and Pearl will find a visual murmering of links and oppositions in the visual signature marks that create a tangential movement within the space.

The installation aspect will develop through the artist curatorial role that Anoushka and Pearl take on. This group exhibition will be an experiment in explorative curation, and the final installation will be presented as part of this years Glasgow Project Room programme. Includes work by CBP artist Enzo Marra.

MEDIUM AND MEMORY

HackelBury is delighted to be hosting the group exhibition Medium and Memory curated by art historian and contemporary art writer Griselda Pollock.

Artists: Sutapa Biswas, Bracha L. Ettinger, Benjamin Hannavy Cousen, Asel Kadyrkhanova, Joanne Leonard, Christine Taylor Patten, Judith Tucker, Coral Woodbury.

Medium and Memory stages four conversations pairing eight artists from different countries, generations, ethnicities, and personal histories who all share a deep engagement with the materiality of their media - painting drawing, moving image, photography and photo-collage -while focussing on memory - personal, historical, cultural, suppressed, discovered, restored.

Putting a still resonant, modernist medium-consciousness into tension with a post-modern sense of responsibility to ‘the burden of history’, these artists explore an ethical dimension in contemporary art - a refusal to forget - and the potential of contemporary art for aesthetic transformation of traumatic legacies of war, famine, genocide, colonialism and de-industrialization as well as the memory-effacing effects of the digital age.

Arcadia for All? Rethinking Landscape Painting Now

‘Arcadia for All? Rethinking Landscape Painting Now’ is a new exhibition coming to Attenborough Arts Centre from The Stanley & Audery Burton Gallery at the University of Leeds that raises pertinent questions about who has access to nature, where and how.

The exhibition challenges a nostalgic, idyllic and elitist idea of landscape. It embraces and celebrates nature in all its forms, acknowledging that in the 21st century most people in the UK access nature on a regular basis through allotments, community gardens, public parks or even simply through windows and screens.

‘Arcadia for All?’ features a wonderfully broad spectrum of artworks by over thirty artists, including Hurvin Anderson, Andrew Grassie, Lubaina Himid, Matthew Krishanu, Elizabeth Magill and George Shaw. They all approach nature from many different directions, expanding the notion of landscape painting in new, unexpected and sometimes radical and playful ways. Moreover, the exhibition celebrates the vitality and variety of contemporary painting in all its materiality and visual richness.

The exhibition has been guest curated by Dr Judith Tucker, Senior Lecturer at the School of Design, University of Leeds and Geraint Evans, Pathway Leader MA Painting at Camberwell College of Arts, University of the Arts London.

Artists: David Ainley, Hurvin Anderson, Iain Biggs, Louise Bristow, Hannah Brown, Simon Callery, Lara Cobden, Kimathi Donkor, Sam Douglas, Natalie Dowse, Geraint Evans, Mark Fairnington, Andrew Grassie, Dan Hays, Lubaina Himid, Barbara Howey, Matthew Krishanu, Paula MacArthur, Elizabeth Magill, Cara Nahaul, Christopher Orr, Rebecca Partridge, Julian Perry, Narbi Price, Carol Rhodes, Greg Rook, George Shaw, Benet Spencer, Clare Thatcher, Judith Tucker, Phoebe Unwin, Joanna Whittle.

Of Lightness

Of Lightness, eponymously titled after the late Milan Kundera's novel The Unbearable Lightness of Being, brings together four artists whose work probes the binary relationship between heaviness and lightness inherent in the narrative of the novel. On divergent yet syntonic paths the paintings of Perdita Sinclair, Paula MacArthur, Clare Chapman and the sculpture of Hermione Allsopp encapsulates the image and object in all its transient formlessness and solidifying mass.

The Gr8 Cur8or

Prosaic have invited architect and curator Ian Ellis to put together a micro exhibition in our Projects Gallery within Bloc Studios. He has selected work by Lisa Lewis, Ewan Mills and Bristol-based collective SWANS - artists whose work explores the relationship between Painting and Sculpture, and the architectonic nature of artwork in a gallery. They each have unique concerns yet enough in common to enable Ian to form a coherent display. His curatorial approach is a welcome antidote to Sean Williams' staid and conservative style of hanging paintings at eye height. Ian will more accurately reflecting the zeitgeist in gallery display.

Lisa Lewis is concerned with reflecting gallery spaces back in to her paintings, abstracted yet with architectural references. Ewan Mills is a recent design graduate and his artwork is based on systems and patterns, with a nod towards Op Art and incorporating simple trompe l'oeil techniques. SWANS have built their reputation on producing wall-based objects that could not satisfactorily be described as Painting or Sculpture. They are simultaneously both and neither, revelling in this constructed ambiguity. They often make work on the gallery wall itself. This show is curated by Ian Ellis and Sean Williams.

Taking inspiration from African American writer and novelist James Baldwin (b.1924, USA – d.1987, France), who observed that life is more important than art ... and yet that is why art is important, Whitechapel Gallery presents a free three-month programme of collaborations with artists, performers and thinkers to examine the interface between art and everyday life, and connections between local and global concerns at a time of uncertainty and change.

Visitors are invited to find meaning and create poetic, playful and reflective connections as they explore works by artists including Rana Begum (b. 1977, Bangladesh), William Cobbing (b. 1974, UK), Sarah Dobai, (b.1965, UK), Susan Hiller (b. 1940, USA - d. 2019, UK), Matthew Krishanu (b. 1980, UK), Jerome (b. 1991, UK), Janette Parris (b. 1962, UK), John Smith (b. 1952, UK), Alia Syed (b. 1964, UK), Mitra Tabrizian (b. 1954, Iran), Mark Wallinger (b. 1959, UK), and Osman Yousefzada (b. 1977, UK) spanning sculpture, photography, film and installation.

Installation Image of Post Nature with JMW Turner's The Festival of the Opening of the Vintage at Macon and Heavy Water Collective's vitrine

PostNatures

CBP member Joanna Whittle is currently exhibiting work at the Graves Gallery Sheffield as part of her ongoing practice within the Heavy Water Collective comprising of Whittle, Maud Haya-Baviera and Victoria Lucas. This exhibition, curated by Victoria Lucas, is centred around JMW Turner’s painting The Festival of the Opening of the Vintage at Mâcon.

PostNatures sees Lucas draw on the constructed composition of Turner’s painting to highlight how imaginary subjects can affect our individual or cultural perceptions of reality. The exhibition features a range of artworks and objects from Sheffield’s collections including works by Rembrandt van Rijn, Francisco Goya, Albrecht Altdorfer, Albrecht Dürer, Odilon Redon and Max Ernst among archaeological and natural artefacts which depict representations of the relationship between women and nature, alongside recent works from Victoria Lucas and the Heavy Water Collective.

A Geography of Colour

This month on 'A Geography of Colour' podcast Ruth Philo talks with painter Erin Lawlor about her relationship with colour. Erin is a contemporary British painter who lives and works in London. After receiving her BA History of Art in 1992 from the Sorbonne University Paris, Erin was based in France until 2013 when she returned to the UK.

Since her first solo show in Paris in 2010, she has exhibited extensively around the world. Recent solo gallery exhibitions have included 'Earthly Delights' at Vigo Gallery, London in 2023 and solo shows at Miles McEnery Gallery, New York in 2022, at Luca Tommasi in Milan in 2021 and at Fox/Jensen/McCrory Gallery, Auckland, in 2020. In 2017 a survey exhibition of Erin’s work ‘Onomatopoeia' took place at the Rothko Centre, Daugavpils, Latvia, and her work was showcased in 'Maleri.Nu/Paint.Now' at the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek Museum, Copenhagen in 2016. Earlier in 2023 she had her first institutional exhibition in the UK, ‘Invincible Summer’ at Wellington Arch, London in partnership with Apsley House and English Heritage.

In a recent catalogue essay David Anfam speaks of Lawlor’s paintings as ‘Cutting-edge contemporary, her work nevertheless has roots as deep and distant as Ovid’s Metamorphoses in which being is forever in a state of becoming.’

Erin’s work is in numerous public and private collections include the Women’s Art Collection, Cambridge, UK; the Mark Rothko Centre, Latvia, and the Kolon Museum Collection, Seoul. She is represented by Vigo Gallery, London; Miles McEnery Gallery, New York; Fox/Jensen and Fox/Jensen/McCrory galleries, Sydney and Auckland, and Luca Tommasi, Milan.

Lisa Denyer: Chrysalis, acrylic on sandpaper, 28cm x 23cm, 2023

Soanyway Magazine -
Escaping the frame: conversations in paint

CBP artist Lisa Denyer is featured in this issue of Soanyway Magazine.

In this piece, Denyer's deliberate choice of sandpaper as a painting substrate introduces an interplay of textures, as it facilitates and obstructs the application of paint. Denyer plays with a sense of balance and tension between the natural world and the artificial, urban environment and digital spaces. Everyday visuals from architecture, fashion and digital aesthetics infiltrate the work.
