News and happenings at Cowes Baptist Church

During our holiday, Mark and I were fortunate to be able to explore three different areas in British Isles: the North East, Edinburgh, and the Brecon Beacons. Surprisingly, we were blessed with more sunshine than we might have expected in each of those destinations! We enjoyed the changing landscapes and a highlight for me was visiting Dinefwr Castle. The somewhat steep climb on a somewhat hot and humid day was well worth it for the amazing and beautiful view of the River Towy meandering through the valley below. Another highlight was walking around Langors Lake where it seemed that each time we turned a corner there lay before us different flora and fauna: reed beds and cormorants, a trio of kites circling above the recently mown hayfield, a pair of ancient oaks, flower meadows, and a stand of alder that spend much of the year in water, were just a few I can bring to mind. Our lovely Island is a little short on large rivers and lakes, so I very much enjoyed these places.

From start to finish, the Bible is full of imagery of water and the fruitfulness and life it brings: Genesis begins with a garden watered by rivers and Revelation ends with the river of the water of life and tree of life. We will be unpacking this more on Sunday morning as we look at the water of life, and during our Season of Creation we will think about being part of a great ‘River of Justice and Peace’ (Amos 5:24) the justice and righteousness that God sees as true and acceptable worship. I do hope you can join us as we unpack God’s word and see what it teaches about how we should live in the beautiful and complex world God has created.

Churches Together in Cowes meet every couple of months for a prayer breakfastat 9am on a Saturday morning. Churches take turns to host, preparing breakfastand lead a time of prayer. It is so encouraging to be with one another, to hearnews of God's wider family and pray for one another, the community we are partof and the wider world. The next prayer breakfast is on 9th September at Apexchurch.

Representatives of the churches and the ministers also meet on a Tuesdaylunchtime every few months to share news, plan join initiatives and again praytogether. If there is anybody else who is interested in being a representativeof CBC for the CTiC meeting please do see me (Judith).

Our next join event is a Harvest Thanksgiving at 6pm on 1st October 2023 tobe held at Apex. I would like to encourage everybody to put it in their diaries. We will have a simple communion service at CBC in the morning, for thosewanting to gather as normal, but please let's support the wider body of Christand gather as God's people in Cowes in the evening.

Season of Creation 2023

This year’s theme is ‘Let Justice and Peace Flow’. The prophet Isaiah wrote of the hope that we can draw on: ‘Listen carefully, I am about to do a new thing, now it will spring forth; will you not be aware of it? I will even put a road in the wilderness, rivers in the desert” (Isaiah 43:19).

Pope Francis, the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and Archbishop Justin Welby made a joint statement:

“Future generations will never forgive us if we miss the opportunity to protect our common home. We have inherited a garden; we must not leave a desert for our children.”

Why not join in prayer on 1st September on the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation?

Here is an extract from the ‘Season of Creation Prayer’ that you may like to pray.

‘Open our hearts to receive the living waters of God’s justice

and peace, and to share it with our suffering brothers and

sisters, all creatures around us, and all creation.

Bless us to walk together with all people of good will so

that the many streams of the living waters of God’s justice

and peace may become a mighty river all over the Earth.

In the name of the One who came to proclaim good news

to all creation, Jesus Christ.’

Amen.

Here at Cowes Baptist Church we are marking the Season of Creation with our series of Sunday worship services, ‘Creation sings the Father’s song’.

There will also be opportunities to consider how we can progress our Eco Church award this autumn: to ‘do our bit’ to live more sustainably, to develop further the garden and use of the church’s grounds and to plan for a ‘Really Green Christmas’. Please do share your ideas!
