| September is a time of transitions. Amongst the children of Nourish staff, we have new high school and new junior high students – and even kiddos transitioning to new classrooms at daycare. In our work, after moving our offices to Dartmouth last June, we are collaborating with North Grove to support food access at a neighbourhood school where, last year, one teacher made lunch for about 80 students, three times a week, using slow cookers. Claire Allély has joined our team – thanks to innovation funding from Feed Nova Scotia – to facilitate and coordinate food support for some Halifax schools that don’t have cafeterias. And we are supporting a team of entrepreneurs who hope to transform a high school cafeteria – despite fast food restaurants being a short walk away. As a non-profit we can nimbly respond to needs and opportunities; at the same time, as a founding member of the Coalition for Healthy School Food, Nourish will not stop advocating for more public investment in system-wide school food programs. Please see a recent interview on CTV Atlantic – and support our work!

| Endowment fund to promote the healthy nourishment of children and youth |
|
After much reflection by its board of long-serving volunteers, the Nova Scotia Federation of Home and School Associations is winding up. First established in 1936, this charitable group advocated for the health of students in many ways – including for the removal of carbonated drinks from schools and reduction of speed limits in school zones – and has been a valued partner of Nourish. As a legacy of the Nova Scotia Federation of Home and School Associations, children and youth will benefit from the new Nourish Nova Scotia Fund established with the Community Foundation of Nova Scotia (CFNS). Nourish, just 10 years young, will use the proceeds of the fund to promote healthy nourishment through school food, gardens and food literacy. Any supporter who wishes to donate for long-term impact – such as through a bequest – may contribute by contacting either CFNS or Nourish. |

| After the 2022 season, our team reviewed Nourish Your Root's performance against its goals—to support healthy fundraising for school food and connect schools with local farmers—and decided not to offer a one-size-fits-all program across Nova Scotia this fall. Instead, we are supporting schools in the Annapolis Valley and Halifax area to work with our long-time farm partner, Noggins Corner Farm; a number of smaller and more local farm-to-school connections have been forged elsewhere in the Annapolis Valley and on the South Shore, with Nourish providing order forms and other resources. Outside of fundraising, our farm to school coordinator Dawn Hare is supporting more schools to initiate snack programs that feature local, seasonal produce. |
