Corteva Hawai‘i recognized as one of Hawai‘i Business

Magazine’s 2023 Best Places to Work

Corteva Agriscience Hawaiʻi was honored to make Hawai‘i Business Magazineʻs 2023 Best Places to Work list. On Friday, March 31, Hawai‘i Business Magazine held a celebratory event, which included an expo area, networking opportunities, seated dinner, entertainment and the highly anticipated awards ceremony.

Corteva Hawaiʻi filled two tables with Kauaʻi and Oʻahu employees and guests. It was an honor to be among 75 other companies and nonprofits who scored an average of 90% on employee engagement (the national average is just 32%). According to Hawai‘i Business Magazine, companies that made the Best Places to Work list reported higher overall scores in core employee experience, as measured by the 10 drivers of engagement, and their employees were markedly happier with their compensation, training, paid time off, retirement plans and workloads. These Best Places to Work emphasize supportive cultures, employee well-being and work-life balance. Mahalo to all our 169 Corteva Hawaiʻi employees who make our company one of Hawaiʻi’s best places to work! We are grateful for each and every one of you.

Kalo grown on Field 107 at our Hawai‘i Research Center served as poi to more than 70 O‘ahu schools thanks to He Mea ‘Ono Poi and Pomai Kulolo LLC

We're proud to be home to He Mea ‘Ono Poi's lo‘i on Kaua‘i that supports the state Department of Education's farm-to-school initiative! The kalo used by Pomai Kulolo LLC, which provided the first round of poi to more than 70 Oʻahu schools, was grown on our Field 107 on Kaua‘i! In May, the DOE served more than 23,000 servings of poi in 4-ounce portions to participating schools for the first time in over a decade. Corteva Hawai‘i propogates more than 300 new plum cuttings in Koke‘e

Since Nov. 2019, Corteva Hawai‘i’s Research Center has been propagating Koke‘e plum trees with Hui o Laka to restore the valuable community resource. Last May, the Corteva Hawai‘i team on Kaua‘i planted more than 100 of these saplings into the ground at Koke‘e State Park. In early 2022, the team propagated 320 new plum cuttings and just this month, the team propogated 318 more new plum cuttings!

This year, the team hopes to plant about 150 of last year’s cuttings at Koke‘e State Park. Corteva Hawai‘i hopes to continue working on this annual project as these plums are not only nutritious, they are not invasive and have been part of Kokeeʻs rich history and culture for a century.

The unique plum variety called “Menthley” comes from South Africa and requires very little cool seasonal weather to flower and self-pollinate, which works well for the unique growing area in Hawai‘i. The trees represent a valued community resource for local families who gather plums in the fall for both eating out of hand and making a pickled delicacy called umeboshi. The trees had been declining for years, so the propagation of more plants is critical to maintain this resource.

Hawai‘i Research Center hosts Waimea High Ag 102 field trip

In April, our team at the Hawai‘i Research Center hosted students from Waimea High's Ag 102 class to showcase what happens in the lab and on our farms. We're grateful for opportunities to pour into the next generation of farmers in Kaua‘i!

Corteva Hawai‘i celebrates Women’s History Month with donation to Women in Need on Kaua‘i, women’s leadership panel discussion

As part of Women's History Month in March, Corteva's Hawai‘i Research Center collected items to donate to Women in Need, a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization that empowers women who have been through domestic violence, homelessness, substance abuse, and incarceration. Women in Need is committed to guiding women and teens toward sobriety, self-esteem and responsibility through a warm, nurturing and holistic approach.

In early March, Corteva employees delivered the items to their Kaua‘i location. We are grateful that our generous employees are active members of the communities they live and work in!

Additionally, the Hawai’i Research Hub ID&E Committee led initiatives in honor of Women's History Month. To kick off International Women’s Day on March 8, the team created a site-focused video to highlight the impact and celebrate the success of women at the site. And to wrap up the month, they hosted a live coffee-chat style virtual Women’s Leadership Panel Discussion with diverse guest speakers from Corteva’s leadership and the local community. Speakers shared their career journeys and provided tips for achieving goals and managing a work-life balance. A lively Q&A session with the participants prompted valuable information and strategies that can be applied by all.

Corteva Hawai‘i’s ID&E team on Kaua‘i celebrates May Day with hula and lei making

In early May, our Hawai‘i ID&E team on Kaua‘i celebrated May Day, or Lei Day in Hawai'i, with a special hula. The team also learned how to make ti leaf lei and the significance of making, giving, and wearing lei in Hawai'i. Mahalo to Aunty Aloha and Kelsie for taking the time to teach and share your talents with our team! And mahalo to our Hawai‘i Research Center team for a successful processing season!

Meet George Schooler, new Safety Coordinator at Corteva Hawai‘i!

George Schooler started at Corteva Hawai‘i’s Waialua farm in March as it’s new Safety Coordinator. In his role, he is responsible for making sure the site’s safety and industrial hygiene protocols are being followed and that Corteva is achieving its safety performance goals. George’s favorite part about working at Corteva? Its people.

“I get to interact with incredibly skilled and knowledgable staff at all levels of the company, from all around the world,” George said. “Being constantly exposed to this level of talent, diversity and professionalism has really sharpened my skills and allows continued growth.”

George looks forward to continued growth both professionally and personally with Corteva.

“Corteva is really big on serving our communities. In the short time I’ve been with Corteva, the company has helped or is currently helping several local schools with different programs they have or are trying to get off the ground,” he said. “I think this is fantastic and I hope to play a bigger part in these endeavors going forward.”

During his free time, George enjoys hanging out with friends and family and relaxing at the beach.
