57th World Day of Social Communications

On the Memorial of St. Francis de Sales, Pope Francis announces the theme for the 57th World Day of Social Communications which takes place on May 21, 2023. This year's theme is “Listen with the ear of the heart.”

May the Lord bless his people with peace!”
May the Lord bless his people with peace!”

On April 15, 2023, armed conflict broke out between troops loyal to two rival Sudanese generals, Mohamed Hamdan “Hemedti” Dagalo, head of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces and Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, Sudan’s army chief and de facto leader. By early May, at least 550 people, including 190 children, had been killed. Over 736,000 are displaced internally and over 177,000 people have fled to neighbouring countries. This has aggravated the dire hunger and displacement crises that Sudan was already struggling with.

With multiple ceasefires having failed, it is time for what Pope Francis has called “prayer for the Lord of peace to intervene where men and women are powerless to bring about peace.”

Please join us for a pan-Canadian online bilingual

Rosary for Peace in Sudan at 12 p.m. (EDT) on Saturday, May 27.

Mass of St. Peregrine - Patron saint of cancer victims and survivors

Tuesday, May 23rd, 6:00pm

St. Alphonsus Liguori Parish, Peterborough, will be offering the Mass of St. Peregrine, who is the Patron Saint of those afflicted with cancer. We have all been touched by cancer in one way or another, and this Mass is a beautiful way to unite ourselves in prayer.

Mass will be followed by the blessing with the relics of St. Peregrine and also an opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Holy Anointing of the Sick.

Open Letters from the Bishops of Canada on Euthanasia

Image description

Over the years, CCCB members have consistently and repeatedly expressed their opposition to euthanasia and assisted suicide, which was legalized in Canada in June 2016. As predicted in 2015, subsequent amendments to the legislation have allowed for an ever-expanding list of vulnerable persons to be made eligible for euthanasia and assisted suicide. Today, in the context of the National Week for Family and Life, the Permanent Council of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops has issued two letters on federal legislation which, by March 17, 2024, will permit persons living with mental illness to access euthanasia.
