ABOUT THIS WEBINAR

Canine babesiosis is a significant tick-borne disease caused by various species of the protozoan genus Babesia. Dogs of all ages can be affected by Babesia spp., but young puppies are more commonly affected. Dogs infected with babesiosis may present with various clinical signs, including abnormally dark urine, depression, lethargy, fever, weakness, vomiting, pale gums and anorexia.

A precise and fast diagnosis plays a vital role in treating infected dogs. Diagnostic tests include light microscopy, serological diagnosis and molecular diagnosis. Treatment for canine babesiosis consists of three components: treatment to eliminate the parasite, blood transfusions to treat severe anemia, and supportive care for the complications. The most effective preventive measure is avoiding exposure to the vector by routinely dipping or spraying pets or using tick collars or spot-on preparations.

About the speaker:
Dr. Yung-Tsun Lo, DVM, Ph.D., an expert in veterinary virology, immunology, molecular biology, and clinical microbiology, working as a technical support manager at Bioguard Corporation.

First confirmed dog-to-human case of Brucella canis:

Image description

The first ever confirmed dog-to-human case of Brucella canis in Britain had prompted vets to call for stricter pet import measures to prevent spreading the disease, which poses serious health risks.

This comes after a woman was hospitalized after fostering a dog from Belarus in March 2022. The imported pet tested positive for Brucella canis and had to be euthanized. This case became the UK's first ever dog-to-human transmission of the zoonotic disease. The foster dog also came into contact with four other dogs, which all had to be euthanized.

A strong reminder about the risk of importing dogs from abroad has been issued by the British Veterinary Association (BVA), urging prospective dog owners to rehome their pets within the UK instead. A call to tighten the rules around pet importation is also being pushed in a bid to protest the health of the nation's dogs and humans.

Leishmaniasis in Dogs:

Image description

PC

Leishmaniosis is a disease caused by protozoan parasites of the genus Leishmania and transmitted through the bites of female phlebotomine sand flies. More than 23 species of Leishmania have been described, most of which are zoonotic. The most critical Leishmania parasite to affect domestic animals is L infantum, also known as L chagasi in Latin America. Dogs are the primary reservoir host for human visceral leishmaniosis caused by L infantum, and the disease is potentially fatal in dogs and people.

Key signs range from localized cutaneous lesions to lymphadenopathy and renal failure for visceral disease. Because the internal organs and skin of the dog are affected, the canine disease is termed viscerocutaneous or canine leishmaniosis. Cats, horses, and other mammals can be infected by L infantum or other Leishmania species. The condition in cats is rarer than in dogs and may manifest in cutaneous or visceral organs.

Canine leishmaniosis is a significant zoonosis endemic in >89 countries. It is prevalent in Europe, Africa, Asia, and South and Central America and is vertically transmitted from dog to dog in the USA. L braziliensis, the cause of tegumentary canine leishmaniosis, is widespread in regions of South America and may geographically overlap with L chagasi. It is also of concern in nonendemic countries where imported disease constitutes a veterinary and public health problem.

Treatment options are limited by World Health Organization guidelines in human disease-endemic areas and by drugs that are FDA-approved within the USA. Still, they include a combination of allopurinol with miltefosine or liposomal amphotericin B within the USA and glucantime internationally.

Diagnosis:

Various quantitative serologic methods to detect anti-Leishmania antibodies have been developed, including indirect immunofluorescence assays, ELISA, and direct agglutination assays. Bioguard has designed and manufactured a sandwich lateral flow immunochromatographic assay to detect Leishmania antibodies quickly. The rapid test is available as a solo and 4-in-1 combo kit with other prevalent canine vector-borne diseases.

The 4-in1 combo test developed by Bioguard can detect:

  • Leishmania antibodies (for Leishmaniosis)
  • Dirofilaria immitis antigen ( for Canine Heartworm Disease)
  • Anaplasma phagocytophilum/platys antibodies (for Anaplasmosis)
  • Ehrlichiosis canis antibodies (for Canine Ehrlichiosis)

Good News, Coming Next Month!

Bioguard Corporation is delighted to introduce our new future product, the "Babesia spp. Ab Rapid Test"kit, in the market. The Babesia spp. Test kit has excellent features that will fit all veterinarians. Our product can detect most of the major Babesia species, including Babesia canis, Babesia vogeli, Babesia rossi, and Babesia gibsoni.
