In this lecture, she will talk diagnosis of the hematologic parasites, or vector-borne pathogens in dogs.   Vector-borne diseases are one of major threats to canine health. They are transmitted by the bite of infected arthropod species such as mosquitoes or ticks. These diseases may cause severe complications if they are not well diagnosed and treated. Severe cases may even lead to organ failure and death. Therefore, the healthy management plan for dogs should contain routine checks for these vector-borne diseases.

1 month of war in Ukraine: local pet industry fights to keep the business going
Image description

Distribution centers and a number of pet shops have been destroyed by airstrikes since the start of the Russian invasion on February 24th. The main priority now is recovering the activity and assisting animal shelters across the country.

Feeding 100,000 dogs and cats

In a difficult time for local players to continue with the business, several initiatives are trying to help those animals that remain in the country.

“Save Pets of Ukraine”, led by local manufacturer Kormotech, has distributed more than 146 tons of pet food since it started working 20 days ago. In addition, 514 pet care volunteers and animal shelters received assistance.

“We keep working. We are looking for opportunities to save more cats and dogs,” the company said to GlobalPETS.

Kormotech is also partnering with US-based Greater Good Charities, which is collecting cash donations overseas. The organization is also collecting product donations from US companies and shipping them to Europe.

Feline panleukopenia, also commonly referred to as feline distemper, is a highly contagious disease caused by feline parvovirus (FPV). FPV attacks the intestinal epithelium, lymphatic tissues and bone marrow, causing enteritis and panleukopenia.

The Bioguard VETlabs FPV Ag Test is a sandwich lateral flow immunochromatographic assay, developed by Bioguard Corporation for enabling the simplicity of rapidly testing or detecting the feline parvovirus Ag in the feces of infected cats.

Importance of Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) Testing

Image description

Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) and Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) are two of the most common viruses affecting domestic cats. Both infections are associated with a variety of clinical signs and can impact quality of life and longevity.

Both FeLV and FIV can be transmitted through bite wounds. In the case of FIV, saliva from an infected cat is the primary mode of transmission. The FeLV virus is shed through

saliva, nasal secretions, urine, feces, and milk; it may be transmitted through mutual grooming, from queen (mother) to kitten, bite wounds, or rarely, through shared litterboxes and feeding dishes. Diseases associated with FeLV and FIV may affect any organ, and include lymphoma, blood dyscrasias, central nervous system and ocular disease, gingivostomatitis, and secondary and opportunistic infections.

The FIV and FeLV status of every cat at risk of infection should be known. Cats should be tested as soon as possible after they are acquired, following exposure to an infected cat or a cat of unknown infection status, prior to vaccination against FeLV or FIV, and whenever clinical illness occurs. VETlabs FeLV Ag / FIV Ab Combo Test can detect feline leukemia virus antigen and feline immunodeficiency virus antibody in cat’s blood.

Prompt diagnosis of cats infected with FIV or FeLV play an important role in management and prevention of the diseases.
