It was Boaventura De Sousa Santos who said "artists are the only competent rebels of our time". Santos' work in the social sciences recognises plural systems and ways of knowing. His ideas have been hugely influential to this community project. 

This address at Verbier Art Summit is a fantastic call to action for artists and a great introduction to his thinking.

About Boaventura De Sousa Santos

Boaventura de Sousa Santos is Emeritus Professor of Sociology, University of Coimbra (Portugal), and Distinguished Legal Scholar at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

He is Director Emeritus of the Center for Social Studies at the University of Coimbra and has written and published widely on the issues of globalization, sociology of law and the state, epistemology, social movements and the World Social Forum.

Boaventura de Sousa Santos also writes lyrics for rap, as shown in his book Rap Global (Rio de Janeiro, Aeroplano, 2010; Confraria do Vento, 2019).
