TAKING THE CLIMATE JUSTICE CONVERSATION ONLINE |
|
Our final training in the series on Kitchen Table Climate Conversations is this Monday night and there is still time to register – hosting a climate conversation with your family, friends, neighbours, work colleagues or a group you are part of is a very important way to reach out and bring more voices in support of the urgent climate action we need. Learn more on Monday! Sign up here. |

After a climate conversation, attendees are ready to collaborate! Together, we can summon our collective energy to move into uncertainty, to embrace and encourage change and be there to support each other through it. In so many ways we need courage and in so many ways we are showing that we have it! The fourth and final webcast in the series explores how to tailor a conversation and focuses a little more deeply on the last part of the KTCC agenda, ways of working together, actions and solutions and supporting one another. - How to approach and build engaging conversations for different circles.
- Taking action and working together: Hear stories and tips about actions, working collaboratively and methods of engagement, including civic engagement.

Climate Live Canada is a group of youth climate activists and musicians that are planning concerts here in Canada as a part of a larger international movement. On April 24 and October 16, 2021, over 40 international chapters of Climate Live will bring artists, activists, and scientists to their respective country’s stage to advocate for climate justice. Internationally, Climate Live is being supported by Greenpeace, 350.org, Fridays For Future, Oxfam, and many other organizations, with individual support from Greta Thunberg, Declan McKenna, Glass Animals, and other industry professionals. |

FEDERAL CLIMATE PLAN – AND SURVEY
|
|
In December the federal government released their climate plan: Healthy Environment, Healthy Economy. There’s an opportunity to provide feedback by filling out a survey on-line. The climate plan link and survey link can be found on this page: https://www.canada.ca/en/services/environment/weather/climatechange/climate-plan/climate-plan-overview.html
Observations of climate plan: While there are many positive programs included, some with budget figures, there are no numbers to indicate that the scale and pace of these programs will reach the target (spoiler alert: they will not). They ask about how satisfied you are with the target (note that 32-40% reduction is not by any means sufficient, it must be a min of 50% according to IPCC and 60% reduction for the fair share target the Climate Action Network has set). Please note that there are indications in the plan that they want to develop SMRs (small modular nuclear reactors) as part of the plan, also biofuels, carbon capture and hydrogen.
On SMRs: Here's a fact sheet produced by the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research and Physicians for Social Responsibility and one from Ontario Clean Air Alliance.
The main commentary we want to make is that: - The plan doesn't really tell us about the numbers - how we are going to achieve GHG reductions, just some of the program ideas are outlined and some of the costs but not what that spending will achieve.
- It asks about the target - so is an opportunity to stress that the targets are insufficient.
- It asks for ideas, We will stress the need for funding community groups and initiatives as well as retraining for jobs in the new green economy.
Please add more about your ideas of what gov't must do to help us reach the target we need to get to.
CLIMATE PLAN CRITIQUES: It is worth participating in the survey. Estimate: 15 min to do the survey. Please read or scan through the climate plan before you do so, so that's another 20 minutes or so minimum. It’s an opportunity to put the justice lens, the green lens and the urgency lens on it. Please also let your MP know of your concerns. See action above re Bill C-12. See also the call from the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives for a Just Transition Act. |

ARTICLE: GLOBAL CO2 LEVELS HIT ‘VERY SCARY’ 3.6 MILLION-YEAR HIGH From The Energy Mix: Atmospheric carbon dioxide levels are higher than they’ve been in the last 3.6 million years, and methane concentrations surged in 2020, all despite restrictions brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, according to preliminary data released this week by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). After exceeding 420 parts per million for the first time in recent measurements, carbon dioxide concentrations measured at the Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawai’i are now a full 50% above pre-industrial levels.
