The spring is coming and with it in many countries, some level of relaxing the Covid measures (although here in Belgium we still work from our homes). We hope that the upcoming months will be good and filled with optimism.

We would like to wish you a happy International Women's Day and for that occasion remind you of our Diversity Statement that we developed together with our American colleagues from the ASEE under the leadership of Dr. Susan E. Walden and Dr. Inês Direito in 2020.

SEFI 2021 Annual Conference

Blended Learning in Engineering Education: challenging, enlightening – and lasting?
13-16 September 2021 - online

Organizers of the SEFI 2021, along with the SEFI Board of directors, have made the decision to change the conference to an online event.

The uncertainty due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its effect on travel, conference planning and the possibility for attendees to come to the event were reasons for shifting the event from an on-campus conference in Berlin to an online format.

A lot of experience has been gained with online events over the past year, so you can look forward to an inspiring conference with insightful presentations, activating workshops and sessions dedicated to those who want to socialise during the event.

The digital format will certainly expand the circle of those who would like to participate in the online conference with a paper, poster, or workshop. We have therefore extended the abstract submission deadline to 30 March 2021. For more information, please visit our website: http://sefi2021.eu/

NEW SPECIAL INTEREST GROUP

SEFI develops activities in Capacity Building

We invite you to join our new special interest group on Capacity Building. The SIG chair is Prof Greet Langie (KU Leuven). This SIG aims to empower the process of developing and strengthening the competencies that trainers (faculty staff, student tutors,..) in engineering Higher Education need to thrive in a fast-changing world.
The group members should preferably be active in the field and willing to actively contribute to the realization of the special interest group’s objectives. As such, members should participate at least once every year at an activity of the SIG.

Experiencing Engineering Ethics Education: Reflections, evidence and perspectives on engineering ethics education in practice

The SEFI Ethics Spring School 2021 will offer one and a half days of interactive workshops, papers, and discussions on new ideas and practices in teaching and researching engineering ethics. The audience for the Spring School is teachers and programme leaders who address or would like to address engineering ethics in their teaching, researchers who are working on understanding or advancing the field, and students who study or care about ethics in the engineering professions.

PAEE/ALE’2021: International Conference on Active Learning in Engineering Education The Development of Engineering Competences in a Global Context

7 - 9 July 2021 - Braga, Portugal. The conference is organized into three main sections: onsite, hybrid, and online. Online participants will attend the conference via Zoom Meetings. The access to the sessions on each day will be sent one day in advance to your registered emails. The theme of this year’s conference is “The Development of Competences for Engineers within a Global Context”, which is an excellent opportunity to discuss research and current practice under this challenging theme.

New European Bauhaus

With the Green Deal, the European Commission has set the goal for Europe to achieve economic growth without overusing the earth’s resources. This will require new ideas and solutions from technology and design for how we live and work. In order to achieve the transformation of living spaces, the European Commission has launched the New European Bauhaus, re-evoking the ideas of the German Bauhaus movement from the inter-war period.

The New European Bauhaus aims at being a cultural “project of hope” that promotes the green transition through technology and design, matching sustainability with style. How precisely? With what funding? Directed by whom? These are all questions that still need an answer. The European Commission has invited those interested to contribute to the co-design of the initiative with ideas and practical examples on how the vision can be realised, but there is little yet in terms of structural support.

Priorities of the Portuguese EU Council Presidency

On 1 January, Portugal took over the EU Presidency from Germany. The Portuguese Presidency has set out three overall priorities: promote Europe’s recovery, leveraged by the climate and digital transitions; implement the European Pillar of Social Rights as a key element for ensuring a fair and inclusive climate and digital transition; and strengthen Europe’s strategic autonomy keeping it open to the world.
