Falloween

Photo of author in zombie costume

Our local community center celebrates Falloween at the end of October every year. They combine Fall and Halloween into one big celebration of all the fun parts of the season. Part of the entertainment is our clogging group performing routines to iconic songs. This year, we're dancing to Monster Mash, Haunted House, You're the Devil in Disguise, Witch Doctor, and others. It's always a great experience! I couldn't decide whether the newsletter theme this month should be Fall or Halloween, so Falloween is perfect!

Fall and Halloween are my favorite parts of the year. It's the best time to dress up and do silly things you would never do otherwise. Like become a zombie and participate in Thrill the World at the St. Petersburg Pier to try for a world record.

Yes, that's me in my costume getting ready to dance to Thriller. I really got into character!

It was more than ten years ago, but I had a blast. I had to travel almost two hours to St. Petersburg to several practices in order to qualify, then again on dance day. My husband helped by driving me. Then, he and my sister shopped and snacked at the Pier while I learned the Shuffle Ha, Hip and Roar, Wuz Up and more. They thought I totally lost my mind.

Once I started clogging, I gave up on Thriller. The official Thrill the World groups were all too far away and clogging was close by at one of the community centers. Besides, we dance to lots of Halloween songs, just not Thriller. However, I did find a clogging routine to Thriller.

So maybe next year. . .

October Featured Book!

Chaos and Ash by Carrie Pulkinen

Book Cover

Back Cover Copy:

He's a Prince of Hell.

A literal demon of disorder.

And as of ten minutes ago, he’s living inside my head.

I’m Ash Holland—fire witch, reluctant heir to a cursed bloodline, and the only person in Salem who tattoos protective sigils on the people who actually know how to fight.

I’m supposed to be the "Ink Master," a librarian of magic who stays behind the safety of the stacks. But my magic has always been erratic, and my latest "accident" is a catastrophe of biblical proportions.

I’ve summoned Chaos. Not the concept—the man. Or rather, the Prince of Hell.

Now, Chaos is whispering dark promises in my ear, threatening to hijack my body, and making it impossible to think straight when he starts to flirt. I have exactly fourteen days to exorcise him, or he takes full control and I’m erased forever.

But when a monster uprising threatens to burn Salem to the ground, the only way to save my city might be to let the demon in my head take the wheel.

He’s dangerous. He’s charming. And he’s the only thing standing between me and certain death.

What to expect in the Fire Witches of Salem series:

 Forced Proximity (Literal!)

 Snarky, Tattoo-Wielding Heroine

Who Did This To You?" Energy

 Slow-Burn, High-Tension Romance

Grumpy x Sunshine (with a demonic twist)

Opposites Attract (She's Order. He's Literal Chaos.)

 Fated Mates

 Forbidden Love

My 5 Star Review

Chaos and Ash is the first book in the Fire Witches of Salem series. It is currently $5.99 for the Kindle e-book and $7.99 for the paperback from Amazon.

This is the perfect book to read for Fall + Halloween! It’s all about witches, demons, and fae creatures. It’s set in Salem. And it’s light fantasy that won’t give you nightmares.

Although Ash is a fire witch, her powers are limited, and she mostly relies on tattoos with magical properties and potions. She also makes a lot of mistakes and is insecure. She feels she is less than her sisters because their powers are so much greater and better controlled. When her erratic magic brings the demon Chaos to live inside her and begin bonding with her, she’s in trouble.

Chaos was imprisoned across the veil in darkness for centuries since a witch vanquished him and his brothers and hid their skulls. When Ash accidentally brings him inside herself, he takes his hatred for witches and fury at imprisonment out on her.

He’s arrogant, demanding, and selfish, but he has a dry sense of humor and resists the temptation to complete their bond and take over her body which would destroy her. While he wants to find his skull and become free rather than harm Ash, the spell works toward completing the bond and he can only delay the process not stop it.

Meanwhile, many other problems are cropping up. There’s a nest of vampires, a rift in the boundary between the worlds, and missing people including Ash’s parents and sister who may all be dead.

The author does an excellent job of setting up plenty of conflicts for the series to keep the reader interested while resolving Ash and Chaos’ dilemma by the end of the book, so it does not end on a cliff-hanger.

The novel is an enjoyable 240 pages with little if any swearing, no sex, no graphic violence, and well-drawn characters. There’s also no romance, but some simmering attraction, and hints of the romance to come. Overall, it’s fun but not dark urban fantasy.

October Recipe

One of my favorite fall appetizers is apples with caramel. I make the caramel with sweetened condensed milk. However, I have never found an easy way to carmelize the milk.

Usually, I put the unopened cans in boiling water for about three hours. This method has always worked, but it takes a long time and you have to add water from time to time so the cans remain covered. There is also a danger of a can exploding. Yikes! I can only imagine how awful that mess would be to clean up!

I have tried cooking the milk in the microwave. That requires frequent stirring and is also very messy.

But, I accidentally found a much easier method.

I tried a recipe for four ingredient custard using sweetened condensed milk. It was a complete failure. Trust me, if you see a recipe on-line for custard using sweetened, condensed milk, eggs, and vanilla, don't bother. It was supposed to come out like pudding but instead produced caramel with a top layer of something like scrambled egg.

But, the caramel on the bottom? It turned out perfect with the same taste and consistency as the labor intensive methods, only a lot easier.

So, here it is.

Serve it with sliced apples or over ice cream. It could also be used in caramel apple pie. A friend uses it to make amazing caramel cake by subsituting caramel for jelly in a jelly roll cake.

Beware! This is sweetness overload! But you will LOVE it!

Here's the recipe:

Ingredients:

1 can sweetened condensed milk

Directions:

Preheat oven to 325 degrees

Grease 8 x 8 roasting pan with cooking spray

Pour milk into pan

Bake 35 to 40 minutes

Remove pan from oven and cool for 20 to 30 minutes

Refrigerate unused caramel.
