They Should Have Eaten the Snake

That is the story and the buried data of that first afternoon.

Not the apple. The apple was a prop. The apple was product placement - knowledge as a round object engineered to be held in the hand and understood too late. Sound familiar?

The snake was the system. The pitch. Product management. They bit the handheld and left the salesman intact.

Picture the garden as an open-plan campus. No walls worth mentioning. Climate control by divinity. Two employees, unbadged, unashamed, moving through an infinite onboarding. They have been told there is a tree. They have been told NOT TO EAT FROM IT. That is the entire compliance training. A single bullet point. Human history is the text thread that follows.

The snake arrives as customer success. It does not smash the gate. It speaks. Speech is the original malware. It reframes the policy. It suggests the forbidden thing is not death but a software update. You will be like the administrators. You will see.

Seeing is sold as promotion.

Eve takes the apple because the apple is visible, portable, snackable. Adam takes the apple because Eve has already made it social. This is how products scale. Content provider and user.

No one eats the vendor.

Consider the snake as protein. And plot. It is long. It is on the ground. It has already demonstrated a mastery of narrative. No arms, no legs, no wheels, no motor. YET IT MOVES. There is a word for that and the word is WRONG.

If they eat it, several centuries of committee collapse. No whispering campaign in the dust. No sequel in which the children invent violent behavior as a hobby. A short, unlovely meal. Then a quiet lawn.

Guilt, however, requires a surviving tempter. The snake lives. Therefore the voice lives. Therefore every bedroom and every tax form inherits a hiss. Eat the snake and the hiss becomes lunch. Digestion is the answer to the question: WHY DIDN’T THEY JUST EAT THE SNAKE?

Analysis tells us the apple was knowledge of good and evil. Fine. Knowledge is a spreadsheet. The snake was the consultant who sold the spreadsheet. Consultants, historically, survive the implementation. They bill the fall and then they bill the recovery. Eve and Adam paid twice. Once in exile. Once in every sermon that followed, in which the snake is still employed as a visual aid.

Imagine the alternative headline: First Couple Consumes Adversary. Garden Remains Operational. No flaming sword required. The cherubim are reassigned to traffic. Angels nod. The species does not spend four millennia explaining itself to a parent who already knew the ending.

Adam and Eve on a Cooking Show

Personal angst is just the long echo of an uneaten animal. Despair is the monthly subscription. We inherited a story in which the meal went the wrong direction: fruit inward, serpent still talking. A child in a mid-size city learns this before he learns interest rates. He learns that desire is a mistake and that the mistake has a mascot. The mascot slithers. The mascot moves. The mascot is never chewed.

They should have cooked it, if cooking existed. They should have used a rock. They should have made a decision that had weight and bone. An apple is a suggestion. A snake is a conclusion. One sits in the palm and looks like a logo. The other resists and then does not.

The setting is a garden. Lots of green. Fruit. Vegetables. A babbling brook. The components of a marinade. Produce to go with the protein. The first cooking show.

Think of the museums. Think of the ceilings. Think of every fresco in which the woman is forever reaching and the man is forever receiving and the long body in the tree is forever unconsumed. That is a supply chain. Inventory that never ships. Artists have been paid for centuries to freeze the moment before the correct meal.

The critics, the clinic, the comment section: all of them are aftermarkets of the uneaten snake. We built systems to manage the hiss. We named the systems sin, then wellness, then branding. We hired new snakes and called them influencers. We did not update the diet.

Me? I do not believe the garden was innocent. It was a test market. Two consumers. One SKU. One talking point of sale. The tragedy is not disobedience. The tragedy is poor procurement. They acquired content. They left the platform alive.

It is a story for our time.

Eat the snake and the future is smaller and better. No exile narrative. No industry of apology. No novel in which a man in a room tries to locate the first error and finds only fruit. The error was culinary. The error was courtesy. They listened when they should have chewed.

Humanity’s long afternoon — the wars, the diets, the therapists, the songs about rain and being alone again, naturally — that is the noise of a species that swallowed the ad and spared the agency. A realist looks at Genesis and sees a missed opportunity at the grill. A systems man looks at it and sees an uncleared vendor.

Either way the advice is the same, late by a couple of thousand years but still, in its way, kind: next time a voice in the tree offers you a promotion, look at the voice. If it has no hands and too much vocabulary, it is not a mentor. It is lunch. Eat it while the garden is still open and there is plenty of produce to go with the protein.
