Introducing the New

Thruster Fullwave Triangular Loop

Antenna for Bidirectional Gain!

Dear Fellow Portable Antenna Geeks 😀

I am very proud to introduce a new antenna design: the Thruster is a portable right-triangular fullwave loop antenna for 20M–6M that features bidirectional gain through the loop along with broadband coverage, low noise pickup, and excellent directional performance. Its unique triangular configuration produces two primary broadside radiation lobes through the center of the loop, providing bidirectional coverage similar to a dipole. Interestingly, due to high current flows along the hypotenuse of the triangle, there is also very good radiation off the side on the loop just 1.2 dBi lower than the bidirectional lobes. Because of that, the radiation pattern is almost three-sided. I want to thank my many KJ6ER beta-testers who helped me improve my free antenna design prior to publication!

The Thruster was extensively computer modeled in 4NEC2 to optimize its efficiency and performance for each band (one-band-at-a-time). The design was developed with an emphasis on achieving useful gain and directional performance while maintaining a pragmatic portable configuration. Because of its fullwave design, it is also resistant to undesired local noise sources. According to the 4NEC2 model, the Thruster delivers an average gain of +1.2 dBi across all six bands, with an average 13 dB front-to-balun-side ratio and 94% structural radiation efficiency across the six-band design.

If you do not have the time, ability or interest to build your own Thruster or any other KJ6ER antenna design, you can purchase a beautifully assembled handmade KJ6ER antenna system as well as many useful accessories on Etsy. More than 380 products have already been sold at the J-Systems Store on Etsy since June 2025 with over 90 perfect 5-star reviews from buyers. We are very proud of our store.

The concept of the Thruster triangular fullwave loop antenna was born one afternoon when I was deploying my PERformer elevated quarterwave antenna. It occurred to me at the time that I could easily transform the PERformer into a right-triangular loop using the telescoping whip but with two triangular crosswires and just one PERformer elevation pole. If you already built the PERformer. you will only need to create the two new crosswires as detailed in the antenna design PDF.

Because a fullwave triangular loop is a balanced antenna, a 4:1 balun (not an unun) is used to match the approximately 200 Ω feedpoint impedance to 50 Ω coax with a good-quality RF choke to suppress common-mode current on the outer shield of the feedline. The 25' telescoping whip provides the vertical side of the right triangle while a sloping diagonal wire creates the hypotenuse, and a bottom crosswire connects back to the other balun terminal. Since there are two radiator wires with several band segments in each, you should consider applying heat shrink band labels on each segment to keep them organized in the field.

KJ6ER Thruster

Due the the fullwave design of the Thruster triangular loop, no radials or counterpoise wires are required on this type of antenna. To ensure that the two crosswires do not get too close to each other near the corner, a simple assembly is deployed at the elevation pole with a connecting wire to keep the two wires apart.

In the 4NEC2 model performance specifications below, note the SWR average of 1.31:1 across all 6 bands with an average reflection coefficient of −17.6 dB. The forward gain averages +1.2 dBi at a 37° takeoff angle. The average -3 dB elevation beamwidth of 152° indicates that there is both high angle radiation for regional and at lower angles for continental and DX contacts if the propagation conditions permit it. Finally, the antenna system design is highly efficient with an average computed 94% structural radiation efficiency across all 6 bands.

This Month's KJ6ER Antenna Heroes

Each month I feature videos and content from homebrew hams sharing their own implementation of a KJ6ER antenna including how they built and deployed it, as well as how it performed. This month I am featuring two hams who documented their KJ6ER antenna deployments including a wire-only Marauder deployed along the saltwater ocean in Venice, Italy, as well as a low-profile PERformer in an HOA neighborhood in Virginia. I am also sharing a YouTube ham reviewing his build and deployment of the Marauder. Create some content on your new Thruster build, share it with me, and become a KJ6ER Antenna Hero in a future newsletter!

Matteo Campi IU3UMU of Venice, Italy was so excited about the revised Marauder design, he was eager to test it near the saltwater ocean surrounding the beautiful northern Italian city of Venice. In his implementation, he wanted to deploy a 20M monoband version with wires only using two fiberglass poles. He asked me to run my 4NEC2 model for seaside deployment and I shared with him how much better saltwater would improve its gain and takeoff angle. Review his brief summary noting how successful the deployment was including pictures.

Phil Carlson K0CLI

Phil Carlson K0CLI of Fredericksburg, Virginia recently retired and moved into an HOA community with ham radio antenna restrictions! He was both passionate about keeping up his ham radio hobby while also being a good neighbor at his new home. He decided to deploy a more HOA-friendly version of the PERformer antenna by painting its PVC mast and using black wires - success on all bands including 40M and 80M! Read his detailed summary complete with pictures of his low profile installation on his back patio.

Paul Risenmay KA7APR of Othello, Washington was also very excited about the new Marauder design revision that he decided to build his own version in his backyard to test it out. Watch his YouTube video on how he constructed and deployed his Marauder implementation while also sharing what he learned during the process. Even though he says his favorite antenna is still the PERformer, he demonstrated how directional the Marauder was while he was hunting POTA stations. Subscribe to his YouTube channel.

KJ6ER Beta Testers Program

As many of you know, I introduced a KJ6ER Antennas Beta Testers program to encourage interested hams to get draft PDFs of my new antennas in advance, build and deploy them, and then summarize their experiences with me. If you would like to become a KJ6ER Antenna Beta Tester, send me a message. Your early review of my draft PDF, antenna design and build helps me improve the content quality in the PDF, as well as the construction and deployment process.
