The event is part of Queens Rising, celebrating all things culture in Queens county for the month of June.

Recently I spent 3 weeks at the Shed. This off-grid building in central Wisconsin houses me when I return to continue developing the surrounding fields. Two have been transformed into pollinator, prairie plots; thriving with native plants and already supporting a diversity of amphibian, avian and insect life.

A pair of field swallows built a nest above the porch light. They were sitting the eggs when I arrived. A short while later 5 chicks hatched. Mama and Papa were diligent feeders - I watched them swooping in the driveway to catch flying bugs for the babies. A day before I left the feeding was heavy all morning. I left on an errand and returned an hour and a half later to find the nest empty. All five had fledged!

Their astounding rate of growth - how they all fit in that small nest still surprises me. The parents were nowhere to be found. I am guessing the chicks were nearby, quietly figuring out flight, safely tucked on a branch.
